How Social media saved this girl's life

Postby Netherrealmer » 04 Jul 2019, 12:57

I watched this awesome documentary about a Saudi girl named Rahaf Mohammed.

As someone who hates living in a Muslim country I want to say Kudos for her. This girl is tired of the minimal rights she have in Saudi and she doesn't want to be arranged married to some guy she doesnt love. She renounced Islam and realized she is Atheist.

She tried escaping her country while family is in vacation in Kuwait. Her intention is to seek Asylum in Australia where women have rights. Well Unlucky for her the flight stopped by to Thailand and her family sent Saudi authorities to bring her home so she can either be honor killed or arranged married.

She barricaded her Hotel room and made a Tweet on Twitter asking for help on Twitter to help her. A women's right advocate saw her Tweet and translated it in English so her post got viral. She got rescued and Canada gave her Asylum and escape from her family. Thanks to Twitter this girl was saved from an Incestious marriage from an Uncle or getting honor killed.

Wow! That is so great. This is a direct evidence of the goodness of social media. This countries that still do arranged marriages should be made aware of its effects.

 Social media to the rescue. Good thing she was equipped to make use of Twitter. I'm happy all those people were right there to answer her cries, Twitter, the Translator, and her new home Canada! It doesn't matter where you find yourself, someone will always come to help if you're brave enough to ask for it.

Sadly on the documentary there are girls who failed their escape and where brought back to Saudi to be either imprisoned, arranged married or honor killed.

Rahaf got the great strategy of locking herself on her room and weaponizing social media.
