Youtube's close captioning is fail

Postby Netherrealmer » 25 Sep 2019, 16:17

This is Ray Mysterio making a speech at WWE about his career as a wrestler.

Youtube didn't understand his accent so this is what the caption says:

He never mentioned he wrestled a Transgirl but Youtube close caption thinks so. I can understand why the close caption got confused with Rey Mysterio because he is Tejano and he have an accent specific to Mexican who lives in Texas.

But to not understand the accent of a White girl from California....

It is a bigger fail if you close caption a non-English video.

This is Youtube Caption for the My Little ponies theme song.

The song says "My little ponies"

but caption says:

Since google owns Youtube, I have a feeling that Youtube automatic captions have the same creators with Google translate. I think they need to fix Auto captions make it able to detect languages and accents so it won't be making such embarrassing mess. Captions are important for deaf people and this is the translation you give them.

Yes, The captions show totally different wordings than actual most of the times. They only accept some very typical accents and one cannot rely on them.

But what exactly did Ray Mysterio say that it was captioned as such? Usually captioning is done by contractor (or staff) somewhere and rechecked before making the words live, no? I didn't know those were auto captions I saw. Yes, I agree, it would be quite helpful if we could get the actual words/messages out to those among us who are unable to hear.

He is talking about Eddie Guerrero and not a transgirl. Google needs to fix Youtube's autocaption for the sake of deaf people and people who cant understand certain accents.
