I believe it allows you to "share" that person's tweet and add your own comments in addition to it. Kind of like the share feature on Facebook.

Retreat is the same thing as share as used in Facebook.

Hi, you have simply repeated what @daniel has said above. What is this?

You're allowed to do this, it only makes since to me if you do this on an older tweet that you want to be brought back up to the top of your feed to get more attenion.

Retweet is used when you find a post of another person which you agree with or which could apply as your opinion or feeling or something else, so not to bother to write it again you use 'retweet' to post it like your post to your followers.

If you retweet your own tweet it can be if you want everyone to see that tweet again if you want that tweet to get more attention, like @Daniel said above, or if you want to express your feelings, or thoughts or mood, or something else to your followers which are the same in that old tweet, so you just retweet it instead of writting it again.

It's just like post it again, but retweet is a button which repost it automatically. I hope I helped you.

So it is like using what someone else wrote as your own message? Does the retweet actually refer to the original source (person) who first wrote the tweet?

Yes, but that's not in a bad way. For example I send a tweet 'I'm really happy right now' and you are my follower, so you see my tweet. If you feel the same way and want to post it to your followers, you'll just press retweet and they will see my name and my tweet, but under that post it will be written that you retweeted my tweet, so your followers will know that you felt that way at that time. It's just an example, but I hope you can understand the way it works.

I am friends with a lot of different people and bands on twitter and I retweet a lot of different things. Others have always retweeted my tweets as well. I think it is good to promote something new or someone famous. :)

It's better to tweet your work again instead of retweeting. Change the hashtags, caption and see the result. Retweeting your own will not have much effect.

Quite a strange function this retweeting!
By the way, twitter blocked me long ago and I cannot even post my news using this social network, but it proceeds with sending me news and updates :D

Retweet is passing on information from one person to another especially if there are vital information that needs a lot of people to be aware of. A retweet will make all followers of a retreeter to see the information.

If you got a retweet from a celebrity, your account may go viral and you may get to monetize your account.
