Is Video Calling the Standard Now?

There is something I noticed. It seems hardly anyone makes regular calls these days. As soon as you exchange numbers with someone you can prepare for a barrage of video calls. Is it more personal to look at someone on the screen while talking to them? People are going out of their way to find out if a contact is using WhatsApp and video call them on it. You live in the same town with people and they can't even call you in regular fashion? What do they want to see? They are not your lover, your family member, or your close friend. I mean these are people you have some minor deals with or some projects you have to work together on. It's just a matter of 'did you get this done' or 'will you be able to meet tomorrow' kind of thing. Do you need to look at somebody in their bedroom for that?

The reason video calling is not always a cool thing is that people might be chilling naked. They can do that in their home and shouldn't have to run to put on clothes to take phone calls. It looks like we have to start taking appointments for phone calls nowadays because nobody wants to call regular and say what they want. They want to creep you out while asking if they called at a good time. Well, I don't allow the app to access my camera anymore and it's going to stay that way. The people I need to be seeing while talking to are using something specifically for these kind of conversations. That's where I go when I want to video chat and we all have that mutual agreement. Thinking about it now, we even have some kind of text conversation first where we agree on video calling to finish the chat.

I think Dm's is the standard now because people felt awkward even audio calls. I get more dm's over texts, calls ,videocalls and emails.

I don't, I do messeger, whatsapp, skype but mostly on text rather than talking, maybe both of us need proof for working.
For private life, we leave a voice message, fast and easier for our family members.

Look, if I don't know you, I'm not video calling with you  I've had a few people try to call me via Messenger the minute I accept their Facebook invitations and that creeps me out. I mean, as it is, I'm like most people; even with friends and family, it's mostly texts and regular phone calls. We tend to Skype family abroad only.

 I don't blame you and even when I know them, they better not just get up and try to video call me any old how they want. I'm not answering, lol. Yeah, we use Skype for overseas contacts too.

You are right. But I do like voice calls the best just because I am to lazy to type back and forth.
And I can be typing making money while on a voice call.

I wonder what could cause people to feel awkward on audio calls when that's considered normal. Or maybe I'm getting it twisted, lol. Ever since social media and the likes, it's a hassle to tell what's in and what's not. :D So you say it's DM, ok.

I never do video calls unless it is with some close relative on the other side of the globe. I have however done a series of lessons with a student abroad. I had to skype as the student was keen on video calls.
Personally I prefer audio calls and texts , you get away with all the social exchanges and get down right into the business.
However, I see a lot of people insisting on video calls these days since it is free. If they had to pay for these services they may not do it I am sure.

Agreed, if an extra charge was attached to it, they'd not be so quick to call like this. Yes, it's perfectly appropriate for classes and things like that but otherwise let's just get to the point and cut out the nonsense.

I think it is become standard since it is free. In mobile data price you got text and phone and video calls. Or you just use Wifi. If you want classic call you need to pay Extra.

Yeah, but even with the mobile package, regular calls are still there (like classic). People are bypassing this option though and are choosing video for what I don't know, lol. On Watsapp too, they are requesting video calls just for random talking.

I am an introvert so I don't like video calls at all. There are times that I don't answer even text messages. But if it's something really important, I'd text back. lol

Video calling is not as new as most people think. There was a large manufacturing company in my home town that offered video calls way back in the 1960s. They had demo units in their store for seeing how it worked but it never caught on. That system used hard wired home phone technology. The connections including voice and video remained clear for the duration of the connection.

As technology changed, various services showed up permitting internet connections for video conferencing, but it had terrible or scrambled connections and random disconnects. As technology has improved, It is now fairly common for business meetings where employees cannot attend a conference in person but can connect with a video conference call.

It may be growing in popularity with the younger generation, but I have never been on a video call since the 1960s with that display and never would have any interest in such connections now. Maybe it is a generational thing, but I don't think it is the standard. Not even close.

Yeah I guess so since internet is widely available nowadays. But calling and texting will never be gone since those things do not require internet connection.

Lol, would you do a job interview via video call though? For certain jobs these days, this is preferred over face-to-face interviews. I imagine for some, this would probably be more comfortable than being there in person.

I'm not really a fan of video calls, let alone I don't even like talking on the phone. I prefer to text more than anything, I still have yet to join a voice chat in Discord because I do better typing during a conversation than talking. With that being said, I do have a Zoom doctor's appointment coming up in June so that should be interesting, I've never had one over Zoom before.

Video calls are good only when the person on the other side wants to show something about his/her surroundings or they haven't called me in a long long time. Otherwise I don't even like taking phone calls and rather do texting through WhatsApp or Facebook.
