Is San Junipero about to happen in real life?

Postby Netherrealmer » 30 Jan 2020, 17:43

San Junipero is a Black Mirror episode or a stand alone Netflix movie that tackles virtual Reality and consciousness upload. I will summarize the movie so you will get the concept of the technology.

Yorkie is a closeted Lesbian who tried escaping her super religious family to be free but she got hit by red car. That accident caused her to be in a Vegetable state until she become an old woman.
Image

She was then used for trial for San Junipero, A virtual world where dead people remains alive after their consciousness got uploaded.

Yorkie is still alive because elderly people uses VR to explore San Junipero, While in VR the elderly people can look what they want to look like,

So in this Photo Yorkie becomes young again and finally have the chance to live the life she never had.

Image

In San Junipero you can meet the Residents, they are dead people who are uploaded in the system, enjoying their virtual life and the tourist, they are terminally ill and paralyzed people who wants to trial San Junipero. If they will choose to become a Resident, they will die but gets uploaded in the system.

Some Residents loves living there because it's a paradise and they get to meet friends.
Image

While others became miserable on their immortality due to boredom and existential crisis. Also there are lonely people because their family and love ones who died didnt get uploaded.
Image

There is a Russian Scientist who claims he can make this Virtual world come true in real life. Now that an infinity sized data storage is in development, consciousness uploaded might be within our reach. Elon Musk is also developing something similar, I think he doesn't want to die that's why he is funding a consciousness upload technology.

This is a form of immortality that won't cause an overpopulation problem since many people are converted into digital beings.

I clicked from your other thread and ended up here. Sounds interesting.

This type of science should make advocates for euthanasia think again. After all, the body may be useless but the consciousness is still there. Really interesting.

This new show from Amazon, also portrays digital afterlife.

This afterlife is not free, You have to work to continue living because there is paywall for some activities you can do.

I think this will be very ethically questione since many young people can decide not live anymore and just go into virtual world. If all people decide go there and be importal who will live on Earth?

Cryogenics wasn't free and it was a waste of money and time. This science looks like it has promise.

I think the poor people wont be able to afford this. Only the rich people and lucky selected few will enjoy it. Also this is only for the terminally Ill and people in vegetable state. I dont think they will allow someone young and healthy.

Poor people can never afford anything. But do you mean to say even if you're rich, you have to be "selected"? I'll bet if there's money in it they will allow young and healthy participants. The profit motive always has a way of making people say ... "Uuuh ... change in plans."

The only young and Healthy people I can imagine agreeing to die and go digital would be the transgenders because they can now have the body and gender they wanted.

I am not sure if those Young people who decided to kill themselves to become digital will enjoy a community of senior citizens. Yes they look young and hot but they are super generationally different. I will digitize myself as an old person who is close to death so I can have people my age surrounds me.

The interesting thing.... Are all people going to choose a young good looking avatar. I wonder if some people will want to continue as their oldself.

I would prefer to be my young self. Specifically, age 17. It was a very good year. :D

Why? Don't we see many young people staring all day in tablets ( I think before pandemic and quarantine) and live in virtual worlds folowing infulencers or be gamers? Why do you think they would like to live forever in virtual world where they can be as their idols?

Interesting and scary at the same time. We are not supposed to live forever, not on this earth in reality or virtually. We die for a reason. Sure we will live indefinitely (I can't say forever) in this Virtual World), but as you pointed out, people are sad because the people they know and love were not uploaded... so that will be an indefinite sadness!

When my time comes, and I am going to choose between two doors... one leading to this, and the other is leading to the unknown... I'd chose the door leading to the unknown.

I think this would be pretty interesting. I'm waiting for the show on Amazon to come out. If this were to become an actual thing though only the wealthy would have access to it because I'm pretty sure something like this would cost more than the average citizen would have.

I just watch the Amazon series and its so good.

Many dead senior citizens decided to stay old on their digital version.

This series showed some of the dark side of this technology. Poor people who somehow afforded digital afterlife have a monthly 2 GB data cap. After consuming that much data they will be frozen until the next month. The rich people have unlimited data and lives in a Paradise community. Poor people lives plain white empty rooms. Poor uploads can have a better life if their family members pay more money.

One woman who is young and healthy decided to die and become an Upload so she can be with her Upload boyfriend. People became less hesitant to murder since the person they killed can be uploaded anyway.

An Upload boy is angry with his parents because he died at age 12 and he had been an upload for 8 years but his parents refuse to give him an adult avatar so he is permanently a child while his little brother is in college with a girlfriend.

A 100 year old granny gets to have a Young boyfriend because she have a Young Avatar.

This is what I told you. People would like to die to become Upload and be somethig else. If person is dead, why would they refuse it? Also if person do problems tech support can just erase it.

Imagine how much a waste of life it is for her if her boyfriend breaks up with her.

This is one of the few episodes that I'm surprised ended up with a happy ending. Black Mirror is known as otherwise. Although, more movies/tv series have this concept of conscious upload/download like the Westworld, but it is still far technology because a consciousness could be tera or penta bytes of data and very high AI capabilities.

This will be soon available since some companys test how to save data in crystals like in movies and it will bring much more data space. It will be possible to save even those numbers you mention it.
