Smartphone with a removable battery

Postby mrki444 » 08 Mar 2020, 09:00

Did you notice how small numbers of phones have removable battery? Or it can be changed but only with special tool and not by hand of user?
I notice than on many brands like Samsung. There are only few low end brands which offer removable battery. This is bad for users since mostly battery goes first and you can't change it. You must buy new phone.
EU is making law which should make manfucturers to simpily change battery. This move should be good since it device could last longer. I only hope battery price will not go up for such models.

What do you think about this EU move?

Brands with no removable battery to that for planned obsolescence purposes, they want less people to repair their phones, they want people to replace their phones.

Which is more expensive than buy new battery. I have 100$ phone and battery cost 20$. If I want new phone, I need another 100$ and for this one I will not get anything.

I like being able to remove the battery as I see fit. With the latest one I have that's not possible and it seems like a case of being held against my will. 😂 That's how I know how to word it. But seriously sometimes the phone will freeze and not even turning it off is an option. I literally have to wait for the battery to die before it will even respond to the charger. I support the EU move because why should it not be simple to just change a battery!

I saw that problem on few models. Biggest problem is if battery is very hot. You can't remove it and there is a big chance make fire.

Phones with fixed batteries may have their advantages. They are more resistant t.o dust and moisture and could even be waterproof at certain points. However, batteries do wear out in perhaps two or more years.

Even though these batteries are 'not' removable like in new netbooks and laptops. They might still be replaceable if with the use of special tools or perhaps with the brand's authorized service center only. Then again, the question is, will there be batteries available for replacement?

True. Also many users don't know how to replace battery correctly so they damage device from inside and later report it as broken.

This is okay if you have authorizied center nearby but still it would increase price.

And the battery is expensive. I have had mine replaced a few years back and it costs almost like a brand new phone.

Amlost every battery can be replaced by the user using the right tools, just some replacements are simpler then others because manufacturers are using strong glue to keep the batterys in place. Some manufacturers are using pull tabs wich make the process much easyer and far less dangerous.

IMO there are more advantages to having the back closed like water and dust resistance, and batteryes can be changed in any repair shop.

Still, replacing the battery on a 2 year old phone that works perfectly is far more efficient then buyng a new one.
