Smartphones reduce our attention span

Postby elena28 » 10 Mar 2020, 22:15

Our brains have a very advanced concept of time. They are able to predict future events as we engage in our daily activities. For instance, the brain determines the best time to stretch your hand for a handshake—just so your hand will meet the other person’s hand at the right moment.

Our brains also apply this concept of time when we interact with our smartphones. For instance, if you check your phone every five minutes, your brain soon predicts this behavior and reminds you to check your phone at five-minute intervals.

How often do you check your phone?

This lack of attention is most visible in kids. Kids without grow without phones can hold attention much longer than kids with phones.

I believe it's more like a habit formation rather than behavior prediction. Some studies suggest that it's even an addiction. But this is a good point.

Fortunately for me, I don't have that habit. I can stay away from my phone for hours. My Facebook messenger is always off on my phone. So it doesn't call for my attention when a message is received.

With so many Apps and updates on our phones, we can get attracted to looking at our phones at quite regular intervals.
So we need to self discipline and restrict our phone usage.

Well, we try not to have our kids using the smartphone unsupervised. And even in supervision, we keep the things in check.

Wow thanks for this great information, I will hopefully try to reduce my time spent on smartphones now. I actually spend a lot of time on my mobile, especially ever since the lockdown

When I am near my phone, I check it several times. But I leave it sometimes in the house when I am going out and I am just okay.

It is not enough just supervised it. You need to track time how much they spend on it. Some parents check what they do but leave kids hours and hours on smartphones.
