Is the Yellow Filter technology racist?

Postby Netherrealmer » 17 May 2020, 15:23

People on social media are debating about it now.

The Netflix movie "Extraction" is an action movie starring Chris "Thor" Hemsworth , He plays the role of an Australian Mercenary hired to rescue the son of a Druglord in the slums of Bangladesh.

Many South Asians who watched this movie noticed that Hollywood have a habit of using the Yellow Filter technology whenever the movie is set in a 3rd world country, Latin America,The Middle east South East Asia or South Asia.

The environment looks Mustard yellow to make the place look burning hot in temperature and look dangerous.

This is Palestine in American movies and in real life.

Bangladesh in real life is not Mustard Yellow!

I think Bollywood and Tamil movies should just do a revenge and make movie filmed in the US with Yellow filter.

Wow, ok! I can't definitively say I think it's racist. I'd have to dig a bit deeper into the theory. However, it's curious as to why the filmmakers prefer to 'dumb down' such gorgeous places?! That part I don't agree with at all, especially if it's something that they routinely do. That picture of Bangladesh is so serene and breathtaking I can't understand why anyone would want to tamper with it to make it look ugly <3

Is that why the pictures look like that? :o

I don't think it's racism. It's just to create a "mood" effect. It works too! At least it works on my psyche.

Palestine with clear blue skies and the sun shining bright? Oh, come on! Be realistic!

I think the yellow filter is used to create a different environment but it indeed make those places unattrative to the viewer eyes. If it is racism or not I can't say but I definitely prefer films without the filter.

That depends on how we define 'racist'. The yellow filter idea however, might well have been born of some dark stereotype (dangerous, impoverished, polluted, backwards, yadda yaada yadda). You catch me? It is too much to go into but that is definitely the tone being set. A baby senses it. There is much light and positivity in these places but how will you see it? Keep watching movies (not you, lol). Is it racist (depicting inferiority)? Who knows brother man, who knows....Is it influenced by twisted/outdated/worn-out ignorance? Yeahhh!

They want to make the place look polluted and dirty so Americans will think their country is the best place.

That would be really sad and you've given me food for thought. I may just look further into it. What I do know is that over the years, US tv/movies have created this illusion that all's well in paradise, like everyone in America's gorgeous, well-spoken and well-off when we all know that's far from the truth. But I now see some tv shows portraying it exactly how it is - like many other countries, multi-faceted with some wealthy people here, some dirt poor there, the beautiful, the ugly and the downright nasty in various places. And there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I prefer it that way.

@fergus1234, @Angie10- I want to be entertained. After all that's what movies and TV shows are for. So I don't mind that make-believe world sometimes where it's all peaches and roses. It's an escape. But I do like when I can also be educated and take away something from what I watched. Netflix gives me the opportunity to watch Asian, African, Australian, European, Canadian, Israeli, Turkish, etc. Many of them of are very realistic and I learn a lot about customs, traditions, history, society and culture around the world. Film is a powerful tool. It can be used to bring understanding to us all. Because after you watched the various shows you realize there is a common thread. All people just want to be left alone, in peace, to live their life. But other folks just won't leave them alone! No matter what part of the world they live in, it's the same old same old. One person just wants to be free. Other people want to try to control them. It's the same struggle that all humans deal with.

Pakistan have regions with cold winters and they are also got the hollywood yellow filters in a movie. This Angelina Jolie film (controversial casting because Jolie plays a black woman hence the curly hair) is set filmed in Pakistan with Yellow filter.

It's a cold region.

The filter portrays a particular image. That's the purpose. Which movie is that with Jolie? You mentioned controversial and it instantly reminded me of a real life story of a lady being 'exposed' as not being black. Lol. The difference in this case is that people thought she was because she said so. We know who Angelina is though and an actress on top.

No, I do not believe that the yellow filter is racist. Yellow, red, orange are warm colors. The filter is likely used to show that the place is hot (temperature-wise). You will see pictures of places that are vibrant and bright in real life, but that's probably not how it is all the time. Furthermore, a lot of the shows/films are set in summer but they do not always film in the summer due to scheduling. The filter helps the viewers understand the setting.

Look at it from the other side... Alaska is always blue - a cool color. Is that racist? lol.
