What do you think of webcast funerals?

Postby sprite1950 » 10 Jul 2020, 18:35

Today I attended a webcast funeral of a friend who I have not seen for a while as he moved to a different part of the country. A webcast funeral is recorded live over the internet. They have been around for some time but are more common since Covid-19 hit the world. You are give a username and password to make sure you get the right funeral and can watch the service live.

Have you or would you attend this type of funeral?

An uncle of mine also died and I can't make it due to his funeral being held in a far region so online funeral is my only way to attend because there is a lockdown

I found it less stressful than attending a church funeral and it was nice to be able to sit in the comfort of my own home with my partner and listen to all the great things he did in his life that I didn't know about.

There are also weddings held online too. Corona really changed the world so much that funerals, weddings and church services are now held online.

I approve online weddings but funerals not. This will soon become public and used for promotion. I don't think we should say last goodby on that way.

It does seem a little impersonal but at the moment where so few people have been able to attend funerals because of Covid it is better than nothing at all. Also if you really can't get to a funeral in person for whatever reason, perhaps because of transport or because it is far away, it is a way of being included.

Like you can pray yourself without church or priest, you can do same with funeral. Maybe soon we will see live stream from churches and watch priest during mass?

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend <3 And yes, I would attend an online funeral. In fact, I'd much rather that than an actual funeral. Thank God for COVID-19, even here they've started doing that. Culturally, people are duty-bound to attend too many events such as funerals and weddings here and I don't like it at all, usually with hundreds of people in attendance. I want to be able to say, actually, I'd rather not go because I don't even know. You're my friend's sister's boyfriend's mother and while I'm sorry you're dead, I never even met you.

A regular funeral here goes on forever, there's too much food served and it's exhausting. With the COVID-19 guidelines, however, no more than 50 people can attend, no food is served and it can only run for up to 2 hours. People here are very conservative and sticklers for tradition, so I'm surprised to hear many embracing these COVID-19 guidelines and saying they'd be happy to stick to them even post-COVID-19.

It is the first time I hear about webcast funerals, it seems very unpersonal to me as we can't support the family, and give condolences in such a hard moment.
I am so sorry about your friend.

Thank you nela. Yes it was a little impersonal but because of covid and because I could never have got there as he had moved to the other end of the country it was good that I could at least be there in spirit and watch the service. I would not have liked it if it had been a close family member though.

I believe you can watch a mass online now as my partner's mum does it and she is of the Catholic religion.

I didn't know that but still that is different than funeral. I can pass with mass but not see ads "watch my aunt funeral tommorow 3pm live for free".

I did not know that webcast funerals exist. I would attend one, especially right now when there is the pandemic and you can't attend the funeral physically.

Don't you think that is little or little more morbid?

Why is it morbid? She is just saying that she would attend one if it should occur as it would be safer at this time. She's not wishing anyone dead.

Why? If you lost someone close to you and could not attend a funeral physically wouldn't you rather watch it online and be part of the service that way? Granted it's not quite the same as being there but in these unprecedented times it's a way of being included in a different way.

You can make pray in your own house in piece without watching it on cam.

Yes of course, it's a matter of preference, but I enjoyed hearing about my friend's life and learning things about him I didn't know so from that point of view it made perfect sense.

So you have speeches on funerals? In Croatia we don't have such tradition. We have only mass and funeral but no speeches on it.

Yes it is called a eulogy. You don't have to have one but most people do. Sometimes the family will get up and talk about the life of the deceased but if they are too emotional a professional will do it for them
