FaceID and masks - can it go together?

Postby mrki444 » 16 Aug 2020, 11:15

Many people like unlock their smartphones with FaceID. It is easy to use and fast. But mask create problem. Until you put down mask you can't unlock your phone. Only eyes and forehead are not enough for recognize owners face. Now they must put down mask but that can be dangerous especiay in closed area and Covid presents.

Will FaceID change algoritham? Will new types of such authentification ask only eye for scan?

I have not configured my smartphone for such a use. May be face id users would need to go away from a crowded place and then do the recognition and then put on the masks again.
Else it is going to be a problem.

Well many Muslim women have Niqab on their IDs and passports. So who knows...

eyes and ears are also used on IDs of people who got plastic surgery like nose job.

I use digital fingerprint so this is not a problem for me but people who use facial recognition surely will take off the mask if they want to use that feature.

I guess they can adjust the algorithm, but it seems unnecessary? People can pull their masks off for one second to unlock their phones or there's usually an option to enter your passcode if FaceID is not available. It doesn't seem worthwhile to spend money and time to change the whole algorithm just for this.

Plus when people stop wearing masks (when COVID dies down), this won't be a problem any more.

I didn't had idea about it. I don't know do they use FaceID or does it have some special algorithm for those users.

I just read little about that case and Apple FaceID was not working with niqab since it require scan eyes, nose and mouth. Maybe next generation of FaceID will require only eye retina like in movies.

Indeed. There are other ways in unlocking their phones like the traditional number or pattern password or use a fingerprint password, which I am currently using.

Apple recently released an update making it so when FaceID fails first time, it allows you to enter your PIN. Previously it had to fail a few times before the keypad as shown. It does make it a bit quicker. Still frustrating but it shows a way where TouchID was better. Maybe it will encourage Apple to bring back TouchID aswell as FaceID on newer models and maybe let users pick what they use.

It would be good for users but still I think PIN and lock pattern should be available.
