Three Indian Coronavirus vaccines are in different phases of trials

Postby anilmr » 16 Aug 2020, 19:35

Even as covid-19 cases continue to rise with an alarming rate in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech said that, "Not one, not two, as many as three coronavirus vaccines are being tested in India. When scientists give the go-ahead, we are ready with a plan for production."

Presently, two indigenous vaccines are in phase II of clinical trials. While Covaxin, which has been produced by Bharat BioTech in collaboration with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Virology (NIV), the other candidate in the race is ZyCOV-D, which has been developed by Ahmedabad based Zydus Cadila, using a DNA and recombinant measles virus strain.

Both the vaccines, which started trials in early July entered phase II trials in August, making them one of the quickest vaccines to reach the mid-scale phase of testing. In trials conducted so far, both the vaccines have been found to be safe and have elicited a satisfactory level of required immune response.

Hopefully, these vaccines should hit the market by 2021.

I'm always reading about different vaccines in various countries and I get quite excited .. until I read that they won't be ready until next year. It seems such a long way off when we are in desperate need of one now.

A lot of vaccines are being developed and we all have our hopes that at least one of them will work and we will get rid of this awful virus.
I am glad India has 3 vaccines in the trials, we are all trying to find a solution.

Yes, we are all hoping and praying that some effective vaccine is discovered at the earliest to eradicate this deadly virus. It does not matter if the vaccine comes from Russia, India or any other nation as long as it is effective.

First, there seems a misunderstanding in your post. Sorry, don't intend to offend you but term "alarming rate" is just a white lie. This is Virus Condition in India summed up in just 1 line.

In a country with more than 136 Crore population, there are hardly 36 Lac Covid cases of which 77% have recovered and went home and less than 2% have left the world.

You won't find media giving this exact news. People are less likely to die due to Virus but more likely to die from Panic created out of it. So called news media (Print & Electronic both) use Panic to mint money.

I am against stupid practice of ranking nations based on total cases. There is no logic in counting recovered among ill people. More logical way is "Active cases" category and for India there are less than 8 Lac Active cases.

Compare this with Superpower USA who has twice the surface area but one third in population yet having much more cases and death rate. Larger the population density more difficult is to maintain social distancing.

As far as rising cases in a day are concerned, India initially had few thousand tests a day. Now they conducting 8 - 10 Lac tests a day. Considering Test Positive rate of 8% (India has 8.63% overall); you get 80,000 Positive cases a day with 10 Lac total tests.

Don't see anything alarming in this. Please name another nation where a million tests are being done in a day as of now. Then we can compare

Now, coming to vaccine - With media creating Panic and people losing trust in government; India is looking to get vaccine from Russia who already completed trials. Indian own vaccine will take at least 3 months to complete tests. Completing trials is not challenge. Challenge is to make vaccine available for all 136 Crore Indians. Not sure how much time will it take.

Better option is to develop immunity. India is land of Yoga and Ayurveda. If we don't develop immunity (not just to Corona but any virus in general), not sure who will.

Unfortunately, Indian bureaucracy is dangerous. When Baba Ramdev came up with Coronil medicine, he was opposed by Ayush Ministry. No matter what happens, ideally it is better to have Ayurvedic vaccine / medicine. At least unlike Allopathy; Ayurveda is not known to have side effects.

I disagree. I don't think it's stupid. They need to use some kind of data to get a handle of this virus. I mean this virus is like no other! I think it would be stupid to wholly rely on just case numbers. That's unscientific. Don't you think?

Quite unfortunate and ultmost sympathy go to the most hit countries by the pandemic. The thing is that to develop a vaccine is really something that has to undergo series of clinical trials and what is the most devastating feature about this particular virus is that it can't be proven weather once contracted the virus and recovered from it that you can't recontract the virus.

I agree. Considering that India has emerged as the new epicenter.

I'm really starting to hate words like pandemic and epicenter.

Pandemics before COVID-19: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resour ... emics.html

Last pandemic before COVID-19 was H1N1 and it lasted 19 months.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_swine_flu_pandemic

There was no panic in the streets, the politicians in America actually listened to healthcare officials, particularly the ones with expertise in infectious disease control, and compared to COVID-19, H1N1 seemed like a "nice virus" that wasn't trying to destroy the economy which is so much more important than human life.

Indeed. I can remember when they started warning people back in March. Next thing I knew they were announcing a pandemic and telling people to stay at home! MIND BLOWN!! And it just kept getting worse. Now they are reporting that the death rates and case counts are decreasing. I'm like "Yeah but! Those statistics are still people!!" Don't say it like it's a good thing. Because to tell you the truth ... because of all the confusion in my country (USA) ... I don't trust the numbers! They could be intentionally misreporting the numbers.

There was a nursing home that was not reporting deaths. Know how they caught and exposed? They asked for too many body bags. The folks who supply body bags got suspicious and reported them to law enforcement. The person say "Well they usually only ask for 3. This time they asked for 12." UNBELIEVABLE!! One of the bodies in the bags was a nurse or other healthcare worker who worked at the nursing home. Not even a patient! How crazy is that?
