Windows Defender will not possible disable

Postby mrki444 » 07 Sep 2020, 16:48

This is latest news from Microsoft. This setting will come with August update. So if somebody had plan buy some antivirus protection it will just waste of money.

This is official Microsoft announce:
This setting is discontinued and will be ignored on client devices, as of the August 2020 (version 4.18.2007.8) update to Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
Setting this value to true will not change Microsoft Defender Antivirus behavior on client devices. This applies both to managed clients (E3 and E5) and to unmanaged devices (home and pro SKU). Servers are excepted from this change.

I wonder how will other security companys respond on this Microsoft move. True, Defender is very good program but now others will lose a lot money and I don't think Avira, Kaspersky and other companys will just watch that in piece.

From what I have seen, it should disable itself when it detects another Anti-Virus software - https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/micro ... s-software
However, Microsoft states that "Microsoft Defender antivirus automatically turns itself off when it detects another antivirus program." As long as that setting works as intended, it means you should be able to run another antivirus program of your choice, and it won't conflict with Microsoft Defender.

Basically it seems to forcing itself upon people who wants to use nothing and just live off skill and luck when it comes to avoiding getting infected. This decision is probably for the best for every internet user anyway. More secure internet connected devices means less malware infected devices being used for malicious purposes to attack good users, take down websites and services and allow criminals to use them to hide their tracks.

How about this statement
It’s always been a bit tricky to turn off Microsoft Defender in Windows 10, and while you could pause its real-time protection, it would automatically turn itself back on later.
There was a way to disable it via the registry, but with the Windows 10 August 2020 update (version 4.18.2007.8), which has just been released, the setting you were able to change has been “discontinued and will be ignored on client devices,” according to Microsoft.

Also some people say this happend after every Windows Update.
What if Windows Defender start before other antivirus software? Will later start of other antivirus software turn of Defender or both will run in background? That will eat a lot of resources.

This is also very hard to do or almost imposible, since Windows have force update after some time. It is new security measurment.

You have Windows 10? He is good but this was available only in first versions. If ever reinstall windows you will get newer version and this will be much harder done or not possible.

I have no plans of reinstalling at all. Reinstalling with internet off is also a way to bypass updates.

Using a DNS based block list (like Pi-hope or a resolver like NextDNS) on the router to block (sub)domains connected to Windows update should also block future Windows updates.

I don’t encourage users to do so but that is another method.

This is way complicated for basic users. Also I think Windows add new servers or check are some blocked because of pirate software.
