Google vs Australia - consequences worldwide

Postby mrki444 » 26 Jan 2021, 20:43

The most big tech companys are currently at war with governments, politics. Now new front is open on the south hemisphere between Australia and Google.

Australia request Google pays fees to authors and newspapers since they generate news for its search engine. Some say lobbyists from big news companies done pressure to Australia government since those lost money from classic advertisers and many of them fired reporters and keep only digital versions. Some Rupert Murdoch has influence in that since he is owner ABC News in Australia and few more news companies.

Google on the other side don't want to accept those terms. If it pays penalty it is not to big amount. Also, if Australia ban Google from the market it will not affect too much on the Google business side. Google has some other cards too. The Google search engine can be replaced with Bing or DuckDuckGo but what can replace Google Maps, YouTube or Gmail? Who says Google will not pull out those products from Australia market?

In both cases this can have consequences worldwide. Who ever wins who say it will not spread trough world? Maybe all other countries will ask Google to pay fees to their news companies?

Sorry if I made it to long for forum discussion.

This isn't the first time Australia feuded with a tech Company. Australia is known to censor videogame violence, so Mortal Kombat looks boring in Australia.

The loss of youtube would be a complete disaster  . It means the loss of tons of educational videos for free. It would mean millions steps backward about technology and schooling. My last university and my postgraduate course, especially the first, make a heavy use of youtube and I always did the same for my students.

This is not censor against violence. It is just about reporting news. What if Google stay in Australia but decide charge them positioning or use ?

Facebook blocked 2 million Australians users. Now people are angry on both sides. Looks to many organizations used Facebook as primary tool for communications so they stay without it.

Today I read that Google has reached an agreement and will pay the media in Australia for the use of the content, as recently agreed in France.
Facebook has taken a more uncompromising stance and decided that it will block Australian users from accessing news on its platform, preventing them from viewing or sharing articles from Australian or other media. Users outside Australia will also no longer be able to share Australian media articles.
