Replacing laptop motherboard more expensive than new laptop

Postby mrki444 » 16 Feb 2021, 22:37

On my job we got inmorral offer from laptop repair shop.

Colleage brok inside port of power of adapter so he can't charge laptop anymore. Laptop is HP Proobok with i3 processor, Display port, 250GB of HD drive.

Current price of such model is about 1200$. Model which we send on repair on already 4 years old so it is not worth that much.

Repair shop want replace motherboard. Price is next - hands 40$, motherboard 1550$.

Yes you read it correct.

Price for motherboard is more expensive than new laptop. And probably little better than ours 4 years old.

Can you believe this?

Honestly I think some companies overpriced products because they think people don't compare prices. And if it is a public company it is even worst.

How can they justify charging that much for a motherboard? Did they tell you the make and model of the motherboard?

Yes, I believe. Since I began to use PCs, I listened the same about motherboards: when a motherboard destroys, it's a complete disaster for the device :o . Really, it's better to buy a new (and more modern) device than a new motherboard for an old device. The worst matter in my opinion comes when the PC or notebook is not more than 1 or 2 years old :?

Often new models are very similar but different so they don't fit. When you check model numbers, if they are not all same, probably it will not fit. It can be small difference but still not be compatibile with model.

Yes depending on the brand of the laptop, or how scarce the motherboard is

The motherboard is the major component of the computer but it should not be more expensive than a new computer

As far as my knowledge is concerned, notebook motherboard replacements cost about $150. It is not as expensive as buying a new notebook, though.

Yeah that's very true, buying a motherboard is equivalent to buying a new laptop hence most people just buy new PCs when their old ones have motherboard issues.

I wouldn't say it's more expensive but it would not be a wise decision to do so as it's makes very less sense. Its better to buy a new laptop by exchanging the Old and damaged one because you will get a new and better laptop, also you will save some money by giving the older one away.
