Windows11

Postby Pousinha » 22 Sep 2021, 22:49

Did you hear about the new Window11? This year, Microsoft launched this new O.S. In my country, there aren't still sold devices owning the new Windows11, but some of them counting on specific features, are eligible for the free upgrade that will be ready at the beginning of 2022. I hope my new Vaio could be one of them.

It's funny that Microsoft stated before that Windows version 10 would be the last and stable version. However, they say that devices that run on Windows 10 will upgrade freely into 11 on October 5, 2021.

I would have sworn that windows 10 would be the last windows we will be using, now they have introduced windows 11 i wonder how smooth that is going to run, we will wait and see how it all works out by the time it reaches my country.

I was happy with Windows 7 but my technician alerted me that there will be no help provided should I have issues to deal with but I think help is available. I am not happy with Windows 10.

Windows 7 was the last OS that I used from Windows. I heard that they will not come up with more versions after Windows10 but here they are.

I think they planned to come with a new OS naming scheme. Yet if they still want to go with Windows naming series, then we would have 11 and then may be 12.
So any special features that we would see in Windows 11?

October 5, my friend? I opened the Microsoft support page and it says since January 2022, but surely that's for Latin America. Which country are you from? Maybe Microsoft gets in a hurry for your country's updates for free (I don't know why so much hurry :( ).

Microsoft is a financial gain company (unfortunately, it's not Linux), so it's quite unbelievable Windows 10 being the last. I was wandering during a while when the launching of the next windows and now, Windows 11 is coming :? .

Your technician is right: since January 2020, no more updates for ancient O.S. I have 2 very old netbooks running Windows 7 starter (purchased respectively in 2010 and 2012), not supporting any updates and worse, not supporting any internet security program (maybe the only suitable is Avira free), that ended up unprotected cause the Microsoft decision :x

Good evening Fergal, I'm a linuxian too. In spite of owning Windows devices (universities love Microsoft too much, so it's impossible to get rid of Windows among degrees, postgrad and more superior courses and Latin American banks love Microsoft too :? ), I'm writing now in the forum from a Linux based O.S. My second Toshiba is running Ubuntu Focal Fossa (20.04 distro) since months and I'm going very well with. Focal Fossa contains lot of programs and apps we need to work, without the obligation to do tons of researches to install them from terminal. It's only to go to the Ubuntu Software folder and we find painting programs (the very useful GIMP is here), Telegram for Linux, Skype for Linux and much more. They install if we only push a button. I think the next netbook I'll purchase will be a Linux based one (preferably Ubuntu, but I'm opened to use a Debian based one too).

I use Windows, that's what I know how to use and it is what I need to use for work. I have done Linux installations before on an unused laptop and a couple of times on VMs. I've taken a look at at different distros, including Ubuntu, but don't know enough to use them efficiently.

I use Windows 7. My kids tell me that I'm in the Dark Ages. But when something works for you, you don't want to mess it up! My son likes Linux but I won't go near it.

One of the good thing of a Linux, is it's very hard to get infected like Windows and pretty impossible if we mainly work using a second user interface, no admin privileges (this told me an Italian linuxian colleague). In any way, I never had infection matters while using Linux (I faced several while using Windows 7, it went very better since Windows 8 and now I hope Windows 11 could be fine), even during long sessions of admin privileges interface (I need it to fully use pendrives and the Ubuntu Software folder). Obviously, we need to pay attention to phishing and it's very advisable to go on using the 2FA while opening our e-mail, as if we were using Windows or MAC.

Don't worry, my friend, if your kids use the latest Ubuntu distros, they are very user-friendly 8-)

Oh, no, my friend: in such case, I'll avoid to update my little new VAIO to Windows 11.
I started to use Linux (distro Ubuntu Precise Pangolin) more or less 10 years ago. I wanted a free of charges O.S., not becoming easily infected as Windows 7. I wanted to learn how to use a new O:S. able to let me spare money in the future (until Windows 8, defender was not worth, it let pass tons of threats, so there was the need to buy a commercial internet security, as I was an online worker yet). I also wanted to get rid of Microsoft Office, as its price is (and was) shamefully high. Unfortunately I couldn't get rid of Windows because, as I told before, universities and banks (my country's banks, at least) love Windows. Some pay to programs of mine, especially in the past, required Windows (or better, required Microsoft Word). Or they simply can't be installed in some Linux distros. So I ended up using both Windows 10 and Linux.
