Last public payphone removed from New York

Postby Fergal » 30 May 2022, 07:59

Do you remember public payphones? Are there any in your area?

In a sign of advancing technology and increased use of mobile phones, the last remaining public payphone kiosk has been removed from New York city.

Yes I do. When I was on college there was a public payphone inside of post office. I used it call my mom since it was much cheaper than from mobile phone. My mom didn't have mobile phone, only land line, so this was a chance to speak with her much often. In payphone after a call you pay a lady in post office service. That was great since you didn't had to have those special cards for it.

My house is near the PLDT and there's a public phone there. When we make a call it's free. When many are using it, we go business store and use their and pay for the call.

Now I have my own landline as an added service since I am a wifi subscriber of the PLDT. When I am out of town, I use my cellphone and my call is free as part of my Network bundle of subscription.

Here we can still find public payphones but they are increasingly rare. They are very simple to use here, we insert a coin and we can speak for some minutes, it is practical especially if we run out of batery we will always have a solution.

I haven't seen a working payphone in ages!! We used to use them when we were growing up to call collect to our parents (we didn't have money) to let them know we were okay when we were out. Before we were teenagers we were allowed to walk a half a mile to the downtown area where the library was, a 5 and 10 shop, pizza place and candy store. The candy store had penny candy! yay!

Using a payphone could sometimes be a disgusting thing too because those things were super germy! I hated having to touch anything inside the booth.

The only reason why some people have landline is thats its a freebie to their internet connection.

I have actually forgotten that public payphones exist :D
The last payphone that I saw was actually a replica from an ocean park.
