I bet most people still remember or maybe even use Windows 7 on very old computers. It was very stabile OS made by Microsoft. Windows 7 was officially shut down January 14 2020. It does not seem to me 2 years past from that decision. Now if you want to install Windows 7, it is possible, but drivers are almost impossible to find.

Now Microsoft announces how Windows 8.1 will be shut down soon. Windows 8.1 was solid OS, but not good as Win 7. I guess biggest mistake was Microsoft try to make one OS for tablet and PC/laptop users. Metro UI was not good and many people disable it at the start. The official date for shutting down 8.1 support is 10 January 2023. I still have 8.1 on few older computers.

There will be option for free transfer on Windows 10 but since most computers with Windows 8.1 don't have SSD, after transfer on Windows 10, OS will be much slower.

when I first got my laptop it was actually Windows 8.1 , but then I upgraded it to Windows 10 and although yes some times it is a little slow here and there , it works fine for me for the most part

Windows 8.1 was a shoddy OS with many UI related inconveniences. People moving from Windows 7 were divided with the overhaul of the interface. It has not been as popular as Win 7, because Win 10 soon came into the market and people upgraded to it.

I got a PC in 2013 which had Windows 8(whether it was 8.1 or not, I am not sure).
It worked well for a few years but I had terrible issues with Mobile Hotspot usage in early 2019 so I got it reconfigured with Windows 7.
I am still using that although I know that it does not has any official Microsoft support.
But for a Home laptop, that still works.

Still most people use 10. They will come on 11 when first bugs are solved and when support for 10 will stop.

You can freely upgrade. Don't you get a notification on your pc, prompting you for an upgrade

I had a window 7 pc long back before it crashed. I now plan to buy a good and very efficient laptop for my online work.

There's new windows being created like Windows 10 and 11 , Windows 7 and 8 can be slow.

Laptops made in last two years support Win 11. Older laptops can run it but during installation some bypass must be done on RAM and processor.

Even it supports it may show some lag because of low end processor. It's better to have a new one if we really depend on windows 11.
