Drunk employee lost USB key with personal details of everyone in the city

Postby Fergal » 11 Aug 2022, 06:39

An employee in Japan, went drinking after work, got drunk, fell asleep on the street and woke up the next day missing a USB key. Problem was, he was an employee of a company that provided benefits to some of the city's residents and the missing USB key included personal contact and tax information on everyone who lived in the city.

Bad things happen when you drink outside. I try and drink in the house. Pretty boring huh? At least I'm safe and all my belongings.
What can happen if he can't retrieve the bag? I'm sure it'll be so hard to locate it. Are all the people involved should change all the details that they used? I really don't know how this can be solved. So sad, I'm so sure he lost his job after this.

The first thing I wondered was why would an employee be allowed to walk off the company's property with anything of this nature (whether encrypted or not). According to the Bitdefender article he wasn't.
According to officials, although the man had been authorised to access the data, he had not been given permission to transfer it onto the USB stick, or to take the data off the premises.

Vice reported that the bag and flash drive was found near an apartment building and the city was assessing "whether any data has been compromised."

I wonder what kind security system city has when employe can download such personal information on USB drive. I am working in city service and I can't download such informations. I can make screenshot of each user but how long would take do it for each citizen.

This is so bad. Why was he allowed to walk away with such an important company's document. I think he deserves some punishment.

Any news related to this event? Did they found USB drive or somebody reported problems cause by it? Maybe some system upgrade to increase security?
