USB tethering - ip address

Postby germainebull » 16 Jun 2023, 10:05

I am wondering, when sharing a phone's internet connection with a computer/PC does each gadget have its own unique IP address, or do both gadgets have the same ip address?
Can someone with insights on this matter please share?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. But, you have me confused in a number of areas.
What do you mean by 'public IP address'?
Your remark suggests that there is a 'private IP address'. Which one is this?

The public IP address is given by your ISP (in this case, your mobile network operator).
On the other hand, a private IP address is used on your internal network for each device to connect to each other.
When you connect to the internet, the private IP address of each device is hidden, instead they will use the public IP address assigned by your ISP.

Both gadgets have the same public ip address which is that of the one supplying the connection.

I am grateful to you for explaining this matter in a very straightforward and understandable manner. Thanks to you, I can now claim to have a decent level of knowledge about how ISPs assign IP addresses to devices.

The UP address of the source of the connection is used for devices connected in a network.

A public ip address is used to access the websites while a private IP address is used to access the network.

I am thankful for members here who have enabled me to learn about the difference between network access and access to websites, when it comes to the ip addresses assigned to internet connected devices.
