Did war tanks lost their purpose in war?

Postby mrki444 » 03 Oct 2023, 19:43

War in Ukraine show us most modern weapons. Some show good but some lost value like war tanks. Those machines bring fear to enemy with their appearance and strong armor.

Now they look like easy targets for rocket launchers and drones. Even so Germany send Leopard tank to Ukraine few months ago and US Army send Abraham tanks few weeks ago.

I think this is last war where tanks will have more important role. I think drones will take over and in next will be more important to have those than war thanks.

What do you think?

I think they would not keep using them if they were not effective. There is something about brute force that strikes fear into the hearts of anyone facing one and they usually will not hang around to use a rocket launcher. The payload of a drone does not seem as powerful to me.

Since age is no longer creeping up on me, but rushing in like an NFL ball carrier on 4th down from the 1 yard line. it's very simple.

Ukraine use cheap drones with 3 kg of payload and destroy Russian tanks.
Turkish Bayraktar can bring 150 kilograms of bombs and this is definitely enough to destroy any tank.

Well, they are still being used and so must have some purpose. But for sure with changing technology and more advancements, even war weapons would be replaced with the latest ones

I think thanks must become faster. Leopard can reach 70km/h but that is on normal road and without military activity. Similar speed can reach Abraham even it is much lighter than Leopard, 54t vs 70t.

Speed in mud and off road conditions is twice as small for both tanks.

Considering the limitations of war tanks in terms of speed, it is evident that there is room for improvement. However, Increasing the speed of war tanks involves several challenges and considerations. One of the primary limitations is the need for adequate engine power to propel the heavy armored vehicle at higher speeds.

Another factor to consider is the effect of increased speed on stability and control. Higher speed can potentially compromise the stability and control of the tank, making it more susceptible to rollovers or loss of traction.

Correct! Here is image of Abrham stuck in mud even they say it is prepared for this conditions. But this is video from 2010 so they probably update it.

I think Tanks can still play a key role, depending upon the Terrain, their sturdiness, how the forces are adapt at using Tanks.
During the 1965 Indo-Pak war, Hundreds of Tanks from both sides fought from each side, in a number that was the highest post WW-II.
The terrain was what was called as "Tank Territory" with open spaces where Tanks can move far and wide.
On the other hand, in narrows forested paths, Tanks are more susceptible to attacks.
Newer weapons also provide deterrent.

War tanks have gone extinct in modern warfare. Their speed is too dull and not up to what is needed in modern warfare.

Right now, the most prominent weapons during the Russian-Ukraine war are HIMARS in the side of Ukraine and drones in the side of Russia. United States supply Ukraine with HIMARS and Iran supply drones to Russia and HIMARS has been proven to be effective against tanks.

I agree with this. Drones are to fast for them and they can't follow them. They are like sitting ducks for drones or canons. HIMARS example like Nethermal said.

US has provided Ukraine a valuable asset HIMARS in countering Russian armored forces. With its long-range precision strike capabilities, HIMARS can engage targets from a safe distance, minimising the risk to Ukrainian troops. Its ability to launch various types of missiles makes it a versatile weapon system that can adapt to different combat scenarios.

When you fight in city tanks can be important. We can see how Israel send many tanks in Gaza as armor for soldiers behind them.
