The evolution of video games

Postby Happyland » 21 Aug 2015, 23:22

Ah video games. Almost everybody has played one in their lifetime. Video games have definitely come a long way since the first games of yesteryear. The graphics, audio, video and all-around look and feel of video games have evolved into a true life-like experience.

We have cut the wires, gotten bigger screens and even have furniture that is specially constructed for the most addicted enthusiasts. Motion sensing technology has replaced joysticks and the consoles have more power than an old desktop pc. We can play with or against people all the way around the world. There is something for everyone-- both young and old, male and female and even cat and dog.
Happy gaming.

It's amazing, isn't it?

My first experience with videogames was with those spectrum systems. So we had a spectrum keyboard. Then we had to have a TV (lol of course  ) and a tape/cassette recorder. Yes the videogames came in cassettes like this one:

By brother had so many games. I feel like I didn't explore them all, I was too young back then. I also recall seeing him playing with a joystick.
Cassettes, floppy discs, cds, dvds and now digital versions of games.

Technology has came a long way, indeed. The next step will be virtual reality. It's already out there but not for the common user, I believe. Can you imagine playing games like GTA or COD with VR technology? I just hope I am still around to experience it.

EDIT: to use the right word: "Cassette" instead of "Tape".

I like this kind of nostalgic topics! I think I'm getting old...
I still have my spectrum 128K +2 and still works... lolol I miss so much that time. I already said once here that the graphics seem awful now, but in that time were beautiful for us...
After, I started to play in a PC. My favorite games are graphic adventures, and I started my journey in the game Indiana jones and the last crusade (the picture below).
The games now are completely different. In my opinion, they aren't best or worse, only different. But my enthusiasm is the same :)

That game you posted "Indiana jones and the last crusade" has great graphics for a 1989's game (same release year as the movie). It looks wonderful, to be honest. Never played it, though.

I still have my spectrum 128K +2 and still works...

Amazing!

I am not much with video games but I remember the old Pacman where it was a hit everywhere. The micro computer was pretty new that time so it is a privilege if you can play it.

ahh the memories.... i was born in the 90's so i saw technology evolving... i remember seeing a playstation for the first time... it was running Tekken 3 and i my mind was blown!! "WOW THIS LOOKS LIKE REAL LIFEEE!!! OMG!!" then came the dreamcast.... which i would only get one years after its discontinuation... but it was great to play on stores then came playstation 2.... same "this look so real" feeling... now video games are much more photorealistic than ever...

it was fun to grow in the 90's.... now kids wouldn't even want to get near a master system/Nintendo or even a sega genesis/super nintendo... if i have a kid, i will teach him to play on those first...

Yes, we've come a long way from games like Pong and the giant, bulky handheld football games. Ooops, did I just age myself? Well, yeah. I also used to go to arcades to play video games.

my experience with games started with the giant arcade games and video arcades, then they got smaller for the home with not so good graphics, then the console makers in the arcade made home consoles. they have advanced so far to sophisticated graphics and storylines and motion captures
