Is better to shut down PC or to be on?

Postby Mihailo » 31 Aug 2015, 22:51

Some people say that it is better to shout down your PC 'couse you will 'extend' hard disk's life.
If that true guys? I am shutting down my PC anyways.

And if your PC is always on, you will pay more than usual...

I shut mine down, the desktop at least. I'm pretty bad about actually shutting down my laptop. I know that doing so keeps the hard drive cooler and doesn't overwork the fan.

My daughter never wants to shut down her desktop computer because she says it takes too long to boot up, but then she complains that she has memory buffer issues and the computer doesn't want to work as well as it used to.

It depends on your usage of the computer. When in the office, I just leave my computer when I go on a break, whether a snack or a lunch break. It is a waste in electricity but saves on the life of my hard disk. Booting lessens the life of the hard disk. But, of course, leaving the computer for a longer time is not economical anymore. You have to shut it down.

I keep mine on all day and then shut it down when I go to bed. It's quite old now and its boot up time is a bit slow so I can't be bothered to keep shutting it down. I even leave it on when I go out now so that I can come straight on it when I get home

well I agree with you if we shut down pc hard disk extend. And if you not shut down PC it will get hot in CPU, it may costs so much, anyone should shut down PC for giving time to hard disk for refreshment!

I have a policy of shutting down my pc when i am not using it.This is because it saves energy and the life of the pc.I also take is a safety measure since it will have enough time to cool down and be fresh for my next tasks in life.Shutting down also help the boots straps on my computer to be cool and all the chips to be at least off.I always switch off from the main socket. That is why my pc is still new to this day.

if you have windows some updates need to be installed and the machine rebooted. also yes it gives the machine a chance to cool even if it goes into sleep mode.

i used to leave my laptop on in the office so i can access some files from home via teamviewer, but since energy costs are getting higher and higher, i'm not doing it so much.... only when i really need...

I just leave the laptop on and put it on standby if I will not use it say in an hour. It takes time for my device to load all the things I need each day and I would not want to go through that process every time I boot it.

It really makes no difference. I'd say you are better off shutting your computer down just to save on the electricity. I for example have a 9 year old laptop at home which was always turned off after use and it still works (slow because it is old but it works). Plus if your laptop has an hard drive instead of an ssd and you want to carry it arround you will kill your computer if it is turned on. I'll explain: when the computer is off the hard drive keeps its mobile parts fixed in a place to prevent impact damage and let's them move when it is on, which means that if your laptop hits something is very likely to be damaged even if it is the slightest hit. It would also suffer damage from overheating if its fans were blocked. For destops it literally makes no difference apart from the booting time which can easily be reduced by suspending the pc reducing power consuption and heat output.

The veredict: For little pauses suspend the pc. In case you want to keep your windows open use hibernation otherwise just shut it off.

I just recently started shutting my computer off. I used to leave it running all the time, but I decided it would be better to be a little more energy-efficient.

When you go on break you should put in on sleep and this will use less energy

I shutdown my computer only before I go to bed. I never leave it on overnight.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. I used to leave my computer on a lot. I don't really know why. It's not like it takes a long time to start it up or anything, but I guess I liked it "always ready." I used to just let it go in sleep mode but I hardly ever turned it off. Now, I usually do at night.

At work, I simply log off and leave it in sleep mode. At home however, I always ensure my computer is completely shut down before I go to bed. We switch off both my laptop and my husband's desktop. I reckon it extends your battery life. Plus for the laptop, it helps in case we get our power cut off; at least we'll have some 'juice' in it to do stuff :)
