Private mail box /server

Postby Sam » 04 Sep 2015, 00:04

Have you ever considered moving away from Google or your own ISP and setting up a mail server or using a service which protects privacy?

http://mxroute.com/ isn't a privacy protected service but they do have cheap prices and come highly recommended. You could also set up your own encrypted mail server and have a software like iredmail: http://code.tutsplus.com/tutorials/runn ... -cms-23004.

I still haven't moved away from Google but I have seriously been considering it.

This isn't something I've considered because I don't really send or receive any e-mails that contain private information. Unfortunately, though, I don't think that anything on the internet is truly private in this era where governments worldwide are becoming more and more authoritarian and less concerned about citizens' rights to privacy. It's a very sad reality.

Looks interesting and it is something I would consider for email addresses on my own domains. Is this service completely based on webmail, or can it be tied to something like Outlook? Also, if you were to use a service like this and then decided to move to Google or another email service, could you also move all your old emails, i.e. so you don't lose them?

mxroute.com use cPanel (which has IMAP, POP3 and SMTP with SSL) so you can absolutely connect this to Outlook. The owner, Jarland, recently explained his routine in a post on LET (running a hosted mail provider is actually rather difficult): http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/co ... nt_1251041 and they had their latest promo (which I think has expired) here: http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/56 ... arly-15/p1.

You should certainly be able to move to gmail or another service: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/ ... 78723&rd=1 shows how to import to gmail. Hostgator (who Jarland actually worked for) has some good articles about exporting and importing using Horde (which is a built in webmail client for cpanel): http://support.hostgator.com/articles/s ... ail#export.

For a techie, this is a good practice. But for ordinary users like me, I guess my present mailbox is more than enough since my emails are not that delicate in nature.
