Free downloads .. are you careful?

Postby sprite1950 » 29 Sep 2015, 08:32

Are you careful when downloading free programmes or files? I am very nervous about pressing that download button these days for fear of picking up a virus.

I am always careful with free downloads because that is a very easy way of infecting your PC. Often free downloads will attempt to install random toolbars which are a security danger since these toolbars can steal information about you from you PC.

Free software when installing force the user to install third party programs which are normally Malware, as a result your machine gets infected, many times without you noticing it.

Best way to keep your machine safe is to not install everything that is free, keep you PC with programs you really need otherwise sooner or later you will have problems either of disk space, internet speed or at the worst case virus are malware.

I am always careful what I download and from where. I tend to stick with popular programs and download from the official website. I think it is good the some people feel nervous about clicking download. It means that they are having to really think and evaluate the risks which is always good. Having a carefree attitude and downloading anything and installing anything is asking for trouble... no matter what antivirus/malware software you have.

I don't download those sites with weird URL names. Once you download the game, your antivirus will detect the Exe files and warn you of possible virus. Then, you have to delete the file. Otherwise, you will have lagging OS

I never download from sites that require me too install add-ons or allow activeX. Even after I get the file(s), I run the AV on it. And on top of that, I try to open stuff first on a virtual machine, specially if it is an executable file.

Well, usually I see if there are comments in these downloads that can help me distinguish it contains virus , whether they are safe , etc. Most of the time I always do free download . The virus only depends on the antivirus you use.

I'm very careful about what I download. As CyberFreak said, I will only download well-known programs from official websites. There are many sketchy download sites like Softonic that I avoid.

I agree - only download well-known programs from trusted sources. Typically, it would be programs that are actually free because the developer wants them to be free rather than free and available on some pirate site. Even if there is no virus, you can't be certain that there is no keylogger etc. I tend to use sites like download.com.

Im extremely careful when it comes to downloading stuff from places that I'm not used to downloading.. Hence why i have multiple computers in my house.. with one computer designated as "The Mule" which downloads and checks for viruses before i send that file off to the rest of the computers (or 1) in my home network

Yes, if you are interested in some free program, I recommend googling the program name and adding spyware and then adware behind it and look through the google results. Also get it from trusted or official website, watch for fake download adds and carefully read the installer so it doesn't install additional programs.

I'm very careful with downloading anything... not just free things. I only have one computer so I can risk getting infected. I always make sure it's safe to download before I actually click on the link.

I am very careful when I download anything from the internet and try to download from the original site. I always feel paranoid when there are tons of pop ups appearing as soon as I click on that download button!

I never download anything if I don't really need it. And even while downloading something that I need, I just do a background check with a quick google search. So far I've been lucky not to have been troubled by any bad programs.

If I need to download something I try to do it from a reputable website. And watch it carefully while it downloads because some of those downloads may try to add programs to your computer.

I really don't like to download much, I worry about getting a virus, I don't like to add any software in order to join sites.

So I stay away from downloading as much as possible, it worries me greatly, and I like being very careful with everything.

if the file is safe and I get green signal from avast I may proceed unless I never download anything free as I know it can be malware or something
