Using a VPN

Postby sprite1950 » 09 Oct 2015, 08:34

Can someone please explain the pros and cons of this in simple terms. I have googled it but I don't understand why some sites do not like you to use it. I know it stands for Virtual Private Network and it can give you access to sites you wouldn't otherwise have access to but why are people banned from sites if they use a VPN?

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) provide anonymity and security to their users, VPNS also circumvent geographic boundaries. The fact that a VPN gives you anonymity increases the number of hackers and spammers using it which is a potential threat to websites. Plus because of VPN users IP address is not it's real address and that prevents websites from collecting data, which can be used to build a profile of the user surfing habits.

Further more if you run a website, odds are that a sizable percentage of the traffic you see doesn’t come from human visitors. This unwanted traffic brings with it very serious problems including spamming, content scraping and hacking attempts, and the majority of these attempts come from VPNs and proxies.

One company that is having huge problems with VPNs is Netflix, because many people are using a VPN to access Netflix's contents in a different country than theirs which is a violation of Netflix’s terms of service because a user is accessing content he didn't subscribed/paid for it.

Vpn have grown in popularity among three types of usersl. It is not just in the hacker community but with ordinary people as well who have been spooked by hacking headlines and identity theft, and eavesdropping on information. They want something to mask their location and information and surfing in a more secure environment with some level of encryption.

A third type of user are those citizens in some countries with strict internet usage policies. They can try to get around the strictness by masking their real ip address.

Most of the money-making sites I use forbid VPNs, so I've never used it. The government has ways to spy on people anyway, even through VPNs, so I don't really see much use in it. Mostly hackers and other people use it for illegal purposes.

I don't use VPN because there's always a risk that your information could be stolen. I have nothing to hide so I don't need to use a VPN.

Sure, I can use it to access some earning sites, but usually earning sites don't allow VPN. If I get caught, they'll ban me. Plus those who use VPN are pretty much cheating the site out of their money and I don't want to do that.

Banning people for accessing a site is a bad way to stop VPN users, blocking the site for VPN users is what they should do depending on the site. Anyway it is highly recommended to only use VPN to access not safe sites or country blocking sites. Using VPN everywhere is bad, let's say you register on ForumCoin with a VPN that 10users already registered with, that makes us think that someone is using 10accounts at the same time and can get you banned.

I recently just tried to set up a VPN (Hide My Ass company) as a way to stream video from Canada only available to those in the US and it seems that the sites are now picking up the technology and don't let you stream. So I pretty much wasted a bunch of time. I received my money back which was good.

Most sites that pay you do so on the basis of your demographics.

Given that VPNs mask your real demographics, most paying sites discourage users from using VPNs.

This is because, if you use VPNs, you basically cause paying sites to spend money erroneously.
