reinstalling windows

Postby tomford » 19 Oct 2015, 14:22

I was having a lot of problems with windows 7 a little while back and someone suggested reinstalling or upgrade repair and I was all for it. I made a dvd version iso file was going to do it but changed my mind. fast forward a few month and its acting up again freeze ups, funny page loads delayed load times. should I go ahead and bite the bullet and try to do a reinstall or repair upgrade? I have not been able to load certain Microsoft updates that's why it was suggested to me before.

I have done this several times (for both myself and clients) and it is no trivial task, but well worth it if you suffer the kind of problems you are having. As a side benefit, it forces you to evaluate all the junk you have now and reduce the clutter.

As a side note, I haven't had to do this for years on my own computer, because I started doing 90% of my web activity on a Linux computer (PCLinuxOS) and they don't have those problems. I started with an old used machine I had laying around and after a while I liked it so much that I purchased a dual core pc with 4 Gb ram and a 500 Mb drive just for Linux. It runs faster than my main Windows computer.

Since age is no longer creeping up on me, but rushing in like an NFL ball carrier on 4th down from the 1 yard line. it's very simple.

First of all have you checked your PC for Malware or virus? Most of the times this are the problems source. Most people like to reinstall windows but sooner or later, depending on the number of times they do it, they will end up damaging the boot sector of the hard disk.

My advice before such drastic measure is for you to do a Malwarebytes scan and a bitdefender scan online to check if your PC is infected. After it use CCleaner, there is an option to check the registry, use it to check errors and correct them.

About the Microsoft update I advise you to use Microsoft's tool to fix it:

https://support.microsoft.com/pt-pt/gp/ ... sues/en-us

If you decide to do what I mention above please update us with the result.

My daughter reinstalled everything after a bad virus, it was some work, but my lap top worked much better after that for me. Let us know what you decided to do , and if you do re install , do you feel it is working better?

I have malwarebytes and avast and superantispyware I have found no significant malware or virus issue. I don't mess with the registry tool on ccleaner I've read to not do that. I do use ccleaner but superantispyware does a better job on cookies. ive use eset on line scanner before. I did all the fix its from Microsoft answers and they didn't work.

I also used sfc /scannow which found errors it said it couldn't fix. I did a chkdsk/r and after a long scan it did I think it found problems but im unsure.

and yes im worried about transferring personal files on disk so I don't lose them but I read there was a upgrade repair that did not affect your personal files?

Hmmm I never heard about that upgrade repair so I can not talk about it. CCleaner registry cleaner checks invalid keys in your registry and cleans it that is all, it does not mess with the valid keys, those don't even show in the results. If your scandisk found errors which it can not fix then I believe that maybe those errors are bad sectors in the hard disk and that it is bad. My advise in that case is for you to check with a technician he can check the hardware and software installed and do a better judgment of the situation because it seems more serious than I thought.

Best advice I could ever give you is Upgrade to windows 10 and I will tell you why

Windows 10 has a feature called "RESET THIS PC"

This feature reinstalls your Windows (it can either keep your personal files or remove them by cleaning all the content on the operating system drive) best thing is its all done with 1 mouse click, 30 minutes later your windows is fresh as new.

You do not need to re-enter you windows cd key, no need for an installation disk either.
Your windows rebuilds itself from the files that are already installed on your disk, it is wonderful.

I have used the automatic revert back to your old Windows feature (which is amazing to me), but I haven't used this one. Thanks for posting that tip, I am sure I will need it some day.

You're welcome, Just keep in mind once you do it you can't revert back to your previous windows (7/8.1) if you choose to erase your personal files, so make sure you are perfectly happy with windows 10 before you do It.

The only time I had to revert back was on an old Celeron laptop that didn't have the muscle to handle Windows 10 I guess.

I don't believe it was only the muscle to handle windows 10 ehehe, my i7 after the update was a mess and I had to do a factory reset on it. I still get the windows 10 update notification but I am still afraid of trying to update the system again :?

I bet that you have used most of your computer's disk space, it could be the problem. You can delete the backup by clicking "Start" then type "backup" in the search field and then choosing "Backup and restore."

After that just delete the backups that had been made and your PC will run like as before. I have a PC with a relatively small disk size, when it gets filled-up I just delete the backup file because it is the reason for the slowdown and freezing. So no need to reinstall, but if you reinstalled Windows already then keep this thing in consideration.
