Have you ever used Linux?

Postby Mihailo » 25 Oct 2015, 16:46

Hey folks! My question is simple and very important :)

Have you ever used Linux, such as Ubuntu? Do you know every command for terminal?
I have installed Ubuntu two years ago and I unistalled it after two days. Why?

- No games
- Commands are hard to remember

I use PCLinuxOS every day and have for years, but I hardly ever go into terminal unless I have a recipe to follow. I don't play games, but I know there are lots of free ones available. Actually it's just an operating system, so it works just like Windows without all the junk infecting my computer all the time.

I had it on an old laptop a long time ago. It's fine for web browsing, but it's impossible to install a lot of common programs on it, especially ones like Photoshop which I use all the time. You need to have a lot of computer knowledge to do anything with it.

You can use Pixlr online with any browser and it's very similar to Photoshop. You can also download Gimp for free. It just takes getting involved with the Linux community to learn what it can do.

Yes I have used several Linux distros and in my opinion Ubuntu is the best to users who want to migrate from Windows to Linux. You can do almost everything you do with windows and not always you need the command line because Ubuntu is much more user friendly than it was couple of years ago.

About games, every major game engine is built on DirectX because of the level of support that companies get from Microsoft. I mean Microsoft works directly with game developers sending them the coders they need and giving them technical support. That is something that does not exists with OpenGL. Further more Linux cannot run DirectX, so developing a game for Linux is more difficult and the market size for Linux games is too small.

Gamers won't like Linux but other users will discover that they can do everything they do with Windows without troubles.

I have used Ubuntu and think PXLinuxOS is much more familiar to Windows refugees. The biggest reason is it is a rolling distribution, so updating is simpler. An icon appears on the task bar when updates are available and one click initiates the process, much like a Windows update. In five years using it, I have never had one fail for any reason. I especially like the way it stays current with Firefox and Flash updates.

Saying Linux has no games isn't exactly true! It's slowly growing every day in terms of games - Steam have even based their own SteamOS on it. If I recall correctly, there was a FPS test, and Left 4 Dead 2 got more FPS on Linux than on Windows!

I've never used Linux, but I heard it's pretty good. I use Windows and I've always used Windows. Never had a problem with it so I don't see myself changing to another OS any time soon.

It's not if you will have a problem with Windows, it's when. Keep waiting, it will happen.

Yes, I 've used ubuntu when I was in college. I also did not like because of the commands. Not to mention the lack of compatibility with many programs and games . In short , it may be a good system , but I never will install it.

There is a significant difference between Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS, with the latter being more directed toward the desktop user and not the geek. I have used it for about 5 years and almost never need to enter a command into the terminal, everything is automated to work from clicking an icon just like Windows does, only it doesn't leave you vulnerable to attack from spyware or virus infections.

Right. And you can say that for about any other product in the world.

I've used Windows all my life and I take good care of my computers. Never had a problem with the OS itself. I don't know why you need to be so negative about it. Maybe you've had a problem with Windows, but that doesn't mean it'll happen to everyone else.

Linux is great but not so because you cannot enhance it's sound unlike in windows where I use DFX sound enhancer that made my computing very pleasurable with regards with my multimedia playing. As with Linux or Ubuntu, learning is an ongoing practice but the sound enhancement issue is the only thing that prevented me from completely migrating to that Operating system.

I said the same thing for years, but working as a support technician and seeing it happen to so many people changed my mind. There are infections being invented every day with no suitable protection against them and anti-virus anti-spyware solutions are not even aware of them yet.

I don't know much about technology, but viruses aren't exclusive to Windows, are they? You can even get viruses on your smartphones and other OSs, no? So what makes you say that I'll eventually have a problem with Windows?

I take good care of my computers and I'm cautious of viruses. If I don't let my guard down, I don't see myself having a problem with Windows in the future. And even if I do, it wouldn't change the fact that I've used it for many years without problems.

Yeah, no games is bad, but Gabe is trying to fix that.
I have linux on virtual machine because i need it for work. I would recomend that you do the same. Windows as main OS and linux on virtual machine. It may be little hard at first but when you get a hang of it then you just dont want to go back to windows. I had to install windows again when i wanted to play skyrim. Until then i was using linux mint as my main OS.

No viruses are not exclusive to Windows, but the people who write them know that is the sweet spot with all it's vulnerabilities and so there are a LOT more of them. I have never even heard of anyone getting a virus with Linux, because the incentive to write one is so low.

If that satisfies you, that's all that counts. Personally it's so simple to do my surfing from Linux, I keep my Windows computer for other local tasks and don't take the risk. If my Linux computer did have any problems, I don't have any programs or data for daily use on it and can reinstall in a few minutes. I had to reinstall Windows once and it took WEEKS to get close to where it was totally functional again.

I don't doubt that Linux is a good OS. It's just that I don't have a problem with Windows so I don't see a need to switch. But everyone has their preferences so if Linux works for you, then that's great.

I understand that. You have goten used to windows and switchis OS and geting used ot a new one would be a lot of work. A lot of people thinks like that. Even i was thinking like that. But now i am ok with it. It just takes small amount of time to adjust from the switch.
