Internet Shutdown

Postby oldbuddy » 13 Nov 2015, 18:10

If for whatever reason, the Internet was entirely shutdown for good, what would you do with your time?

No kidding, you get up and turn on your computer, double click on your browser icon and get a blank screen. You open your network connection box and nothing is listed. You check your router and all the lights are glowing except the connection. You call your Internet provider and the phone is disconnected. You try to call a new Internet provider and every one you try has the phone disconnected too. It's GONE, vanished overnight.

What would you do all day?

I don't think anything like that could happen. So, on an occasion like that I would consider myself to have woken up from the sleep while dreaming of the improbable and try to continue my sleep.

First I would roam withing the house frustrated..and then I would call up some friends and talk to them (because the last time I talked to them was ages ago when the internet was down :D)

I have thought about this before. I use the internet quite a bit in the run of the day. Its used for work and entertainment for myself. Thinking of it being gone makes me sad but it would force me to do other things. Things that I should get done that don't always get done because of me spending to much time online. I would organize my home, take more walks and try to interact more.

Well I would hate it but I would manage like I did before I got a computer. The only difference is I am retired now so have a lot more time on my hands. I might need to get a part time job to fill my time as I do spend a lot of time on the internet

I would go back to the times when we had no internet with the advantage that now I can play better games. You see I love internet but almost half of my life I lived without it as also without computers. By that time we played games, used to ride bikes and do much more physical activity than we do today. At the end I guess I would be ok without internet but just for a couple of days

I'd head straight for the place that I spent many happy hours before the internet became such a big thing. I think it was called a library.

The Internet was invented because of a need for an alternative communication if an apocalyptic event would happen like a nuclear war so that there will no halt in communicating to one another.

once upon a time i didn't have internet access and i could only get on by going to the library so it would be a adjustment but it would just go back to the way things were. I would be in front of the television more and video games would not have online multiplayer but it would be okay. i might even start reading more i was a member of a science fiction book club awhile back.

Since I am using Internet daily for my blog, for FB communications, among others, I am prepared for any eventually with power interruption, no Internet connection.

I have a mobile wife with fully charged to keep my Internet connection working. And for power failure, I plan to have a battery backup or the uninterrupted power supply (UPS) so that my work won't be hindered.

None of those safeguards will do you any good if it's . . . GONE (for good). The question didn't mean a temporary situation, but permanently shut down forever.

To be honest, I'd probably go back to sleep and sleep it off. I rely on the internet way too much nowadays... I honestly wouldn't know what to do without it.

Oh, I'd absolutely HATE it LOL I often wonder what we did, how we coped before the advent of the internet, and I honestly can't remember. Obviously, we did just fine. But that was before we ever experienced the internet, and you can't miss what you never had. I would be devastated at the knowledge that I'd never ever be able to do any more online work, and keeping in touch with my friends and family across the world would be very expensive! well, unless it was just for that one day. then I'd just have to grin and bear it until the internet was restored.

Hmm I never thought it could happen, but then if it does, I'd go back to how I do things: spend my day reading a book, grab the phone to talk to my family, go outside to the shops to buy things I need or want. But then, I'd probably end up being unemployed if that happens since I work in IT

Globally it could be tragic, to loose all the information shared, and the return to when geo distance was a real issue between people.

Professionally, apart from the communication issues, I'd see little difference. Local networks are still totally possible, no dependency on Internet whatsoever, so I guess distributed computer systems will still endure :)

Having no Internet is like getting poorer. You will loose contact with many fun/cool/important things but you can adapt, change, try other things. A music concert, sports, books, friends or travelling...see? no Internet ;)

Well there would be no sites to go to , no games to play, you would have to go back doing what you used to do before internet, hard to imagine. I am sure there is life after internet, I took off time for the internet for a week one time. I survived, but I like to be on it , and really don't like to be offline that much.

I really don't think the internet will ever shut down because people pay for the internet. It is like satelite companies like direct tv and dish don't shut down.Cable companies like comcast, charter, and cox don't shut down forever either. It would be terrible if the internet shut down forever.I would lose my sources of income.

Don't hold your breath for the cable and satellite companies, they are losing business fast. Streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu, as well as Kodi/xbmc are taking share away from them because people can't afford their high fees.

Oh, that would be a tragic situation for me! I could make crafts, and take pictures, but without the internet to sell my crafts or my photography designs, I'd lose interest really fast. I'd probably go back to stamp collecting and writing music.
