Well for what you say there is a high probability of a death battery problem but to do a proper judgment you should try to use another battery in the laptop and see if the same happens. Sometime is not the battery that is that but the charger that does not charge the battery, my advise is that you should ask a technician to check it, only someone who can do physical tests with the PC can help you.

Your laptop battery is pretty much dead... like all rechargeable batteries.. (and from knowing chemistry) if you keep charging and recharging your battery, you'll kill the life expectancy of your battery.. usually the best way to keep the battery life as long as possible is to use it till its completely drained.. then recharge it to the max..
i don't think its your computer... buy a new battery for your laptop.. i did that when my sony vaio was dying and it was the solution to my problem.

Letting it go completely dead is inconvenient, but I have been told to let it get below 40% and plug it in until it fully charges, then unplug it again.

Some people recharge the battery even when it is not down to 60%. That is not ideal for your battery. Let the battery come down to at least 30% before recharging. This will help to extend the health of the battery itself. You will find a longer life expectancy for the battery.

For good battery life, here are some tips to try. Use little or no backgrounds apps running as these drains battery. The brightness of the backlight can also be a factor. Use only the charger specified or made for the computer. When charging, ensure as the battery is charged, charger is removed to avoid overcharging.

I always keep my battery plugged in, even while working. However, the life of a charger gets shortened with time.

So will the life of your battery. You should let it get down below 40% before you plug it in.

This is something different I have heard, till now I have read in many sites and blogs that never drain your battery to 0% and also avoid charging it to 100%, but what you are saying is totally reserve :P

Actually both cautions are compatible. Recharge somewhere between 10% and 40% but not completely to 100% and you meet the advice given in both statements. Personally I think charging to 100% is fine.

I think batteries should be replaced after a couple of years using it. But I do save a bit on battery life when I adjust my laptop's settings not to use the monitor display's full brightness when in battery mode and to lock the laptop after 5 minutes of no activity. Of course, if you are in a meeting and presenting stuff, it is best to grab your power cord with you inside a conf room.
