No internet but higher connectivity

Postby Gayathri Ganesan » 22 Dec 2015, 16:02

In one of my earlier posts I had mentioned because of internet personal interaction between people has reduced. Though they are connected online, people rarely meet each other and interact. Many members here had denied it. We had heavy rains and an un precedented flood here recently which left us without electricity, phone and internet connections and there was no water to drink or cook for almost 3,4 days in many parts of the city. This brought people out of their houses risking their lives and connecting with other people to help each other in what ever way they can. There was a great show of humanity and I hope we will not need another disaster for people to connect again.

Human beings are social creatures by nature. We used to have face to face connections where you could reach out and touch the other person. It is ironic how millions of people communicate through social media but we are really disconnected and disjointed from each other. People have phones but don't use them to speak to others but rather send a text or an update via social sites.

There is no doubt that internet has increased connection between people and we are able to connect and communicate with people who are thousands of miles away from us but at the same time it is also true that internet is taking us away from real life people with which we can connect to. It's all about what is present and what is convenient. If internet is present then people will prefer using it as it is simple and easier to communicate compared to meeting someone out of the house ( which involves a good amount of time, energy, traffic jam situation , money ( not always but sometimes ) etc ) but at internet you can connect even with your friend sitting in Alaska or Africa.

However, if there is no internet then people definitely come out of house to connect and communicate, to offer helping hand to grab someone's helping hand. It's all about situation and circumstances.

I wonder when connectivity breaks and disaster strikes that there should be sense of togetherness in the neighborhood.Residents in my take should start a hashtag campaign to raise funds for restoration of the houses.Should bring a togetherness to people from the same area. Its also away of connecting but with another human being. This will reduce the disconnect one faces with their fellow neighbor.
" People have phones but don't use them to speak to others but rather send a text or an update via social sites." will agree with happyland on this quote.

Online social connectivity sometimes have no value, in fact in most cases when we personally meet our "online friend" there is an awkward feeling there felt by both parties LOL.

It is true that increase in internet connection reduces personal connection. We prefer more and more to live in virtual world. But the recent flood has shown that human values have not lost permanently. It shows that every one of us is ready to help each other when the situation demands.

It is true that people prefer to "interact" more virtually and it is kinda sad especially when people seem to hold a good conversation a lot better online rather than in person.

Social media certainly affects how we engage with one another wherever we are. There has been a dramatic change in the way we communicate rather than face-to-face interaction, we’re tending to prefer contact through social media.Studies shows that people actually are becoming more social but the medium of communication has changed.
