One of the most charming and impressive expression a person can have is a smile. It is a tool for silent bonding. Who wouldn't want to have a perfect smile? For a beautiful smile, it is imperative to have a good dentition.
Oral hygiene plays a vital role in day to day socialization too. It is not uncommon to avoid the company of an otherwise charming person who has a constant bad breath. People also avoid kissing a person with stained teeth just because it gives an impression of poor oral hygiene.
Although this may seem a very common topic but a lot of people are suffering from oral problems which are actually preventable. Many sufferers are among those who have not been able to maintain a good oral care.
It is advised to inculcate good habits regarding oral hygiene since a child grows his first tooth. At about 2 years of age, he should be encouraged to brush his teeth under supervision. Of course, in addition to that, a balance diet, clean flourinated water and medications also play a part in maintaining healthy oral cavity.
While the basic advice is to brush teeth at least twice daily, use of floss daily and rinsing mouth with an antibacterial agent after every meal, there are other things that may help prevent oral diseases:
1. Avoid sugary food.
Total avoidance of sugary food may not be possible at all times and so whenever sugary food is consumed one must brush teeth, floss and/or thoroughly rinse the mouth with an antibacterial mouth wash.
Sticky candies and the like needs to be brushed out otherwise the acid produced from the breakdown of sugar, erodes healthy enamel of the teeth and thus paving way to cavities.
2. Protect teeth from injuries.
Injury to teeth is a common incidence during fights, accidents, certain diseases or sports. It may not be possible to avoid it all the time but it is wise to wear a mouth guard while playing sports.
3. Avoid teeth staining products.
Products like tobacco ultimately stain the teeth permanently and needs dental procedures to make them better-looking again. Most times it is not possible to get back to the original state despite treatment and so it is best to avoid usage of teeth staining items.
A lot of confusion exists when it comes to the use of Flourine for the teeth. Flourine is a double-edged sword in caring for the teeth. While too little Flourine can lead to weak teeth, too much can cause stained teeth.
Your drinking water should be flourinated. You may use flourinated toothpaste but use only pea sized quantity for young children. Use flourine in moderate amounts.
Other medications or medical conditions can cause dry mouth or Xerostomia. Normal saliva helps to wash out food particles that may be left behind after a meal. Xerostomia causes decreased ability of the mouth to be cleaned through natural saliva and hence increases the chances of odor/bad breath, tooth decay and gum infections.
For those who are already suffering from any of the oral problems should consult a dentist at the earliest. The earlier the problem is identified and treated the lesser the spread to the adjacent tissues. This is especially true for dental caries and oral cancers.
