Side Business : Growth Strategies

Postby skysnap » 03 Feb 2017, 07:04

Side business can be a fun way to make money. But if you don't manage it properly it may drain more energy and time. In such case you have to focus on getting your business to grow. Here are some of the options that you can follow to grow your business.

Premium Customers

If your side busineess has low paying customers, then you are less likely to grow. In order for your business to grow you need customers who pay premium price. And these set of customers need to be on the recurring basis. You should try to avoid customers who are paying low in the hope of lot of work later. Those type of customers are really bad. And they are not worth trusting. Because they may get you to work on low price. And if they don't like the work they are going for another person who works for less money. This way premium customers is what you need in order to stay in business.

Hire Workers

If your income from the side business is growing and you need help, then hire. Any other case, is not suitable for hiring the workers. You can't work alone forever. And you have to make sure that you are doing the work in right focus. Because if you and the employees lack focus, then that results in the issue with the growth. So you need to make sure that side business is in safe hands. Your work decides where you go ahead and work on right direction. So you should consider hiring workers because that should decide the future growth for your product or service. So defintiely go for that.

New Products or Services

Relying on single service or product is not the way to go. Most of the people can come up with different products. And this way they can diversify. Do note that if you are doing something like say ebay selling. Then buying differnt type of products and experimenting with it to sell, is another way to go. But it's not going to be easy. Your products may take a lot of time to sell. And you have to be patient while selling those products. Same can be applied with the services that you follow. New products are something that most of the small business have to come up with if they wish to increase business.

Advertising

You may need to advertise your business. It could be through word of mouth at first. The reason for this is because it gives you some initial flow of customers. You dont end up spending a lot of money in this process. You can also do the FB Ads and Google adwords ads. This may initially may not earn you some visitors. But with enough exposure, you get some good leads. Those leads may become your recurring clients. Advertising works for many small business and side business. Do note that some of the time advertising requires a lot of trial and error. And you may not be able to get clients or sales with every advertising campaign.

Recurring Customers

You can either charge recurring price or you can retain the customers. Depending on your business model, you have to choose either one. Recurring price for some of the services and products make sense. You may however have to understand that it's not possible to get the recurring client all the time. So you may benefit from the business model that charges recurring amount. Many business have earned more money by following the recurring model. For example, you can provide monthly service and get more clients. But do note that not many clients want the recurring service model.

As you can see there are many options for trying different products and services to grow. However it all comes down to execution. If your side business execution is good then it definitely helps with your growth.

Those are some really good points. The side business is tough if we lack focus and not executing the right strategies to improve it. It is easy if we are truly working on it, with the right strategies and principles. I find advertising a bit difficult and reaching out people about our product. I will have these points in my mind. Thanks :)

An informative article with useful points. A side business should be treated like a normal business. Put the necessary resources and effort for it to be profitable. Otherwise you'll end up wasting your time.

To grow a business you must keep your eye on margins and get to know your customers among other things. The grocery business is a prime example.

Businesses with razor thin margins will operate differently from a business with high margins and you must manage accordingly. The grocery business is big business but notorious for having thin margins. Not all grocers have the same operating model. Since 2014 there have been numerous bankruptcies in the grocery business. They delivered poor service, with high cost structures and expensive brands that they had no control over. They had confusing gimmicks with loyalty cards you had to pay for, coupons, yo-yo sales, and discounts. It is better to own your brand and offer better pricing everyday with no confusion. When you don't own your brand and you have middle man distributors, it is hard to offer good prices to consumers. You get push back from the brand owners, manufacturers and distributors. They want to protect the value of their brand. By protecting their brand they have been losing market share. Many of them have been forced to merge businesses. It is ironic how the grocery business is a huge cash machine but there have been a lot of bankruptcies in recent years. Depending on where you are located the chains that are thriving are the private label stores with low prices. They are growing at 15% clip while the major retailers are growing at only 2%. Low paying customers are good customers because they feel comfortable to spend more and they give you repeat business through loyalty. They also give you word of mouth which is free advertising for you.

Getting to know your customers will help you grow. You will find out what there needs are and then meet those needs. As you grow as an organization, you will be in a position to exceed those needs. Delivering quality products/services, at a good price with great customer service will deliver a value proposition to not only existing customers but potential customers will come to understand the value they will receive for their hard earned money. In other words deliver a great customer experience before, during, and after the sale and it can help you grow. Customers will be happy and come back to you. Again they will tell their friends and family about you (free advertising). Customers will write glowing reviews about you online and speak highly about their customer experience. Low paying customers can be good customers. The premium grocery business will do well too but again they must know their customers. The Germans have perfected this in the grocery business.

Are all these strategies applied to side income? Why I feel like it can be applied to a main business too?
