Personal Finance : Saving for Education

Postby skysnap » 05 Feb 2017, 07:13

Education is getting expensive. No matter how you're looking at it. Each year education is more expensive with lot of things. And you may find that the quality of education is also reduced compared to what people are paying for. Here are some of points to keep in mind while saving for education.

Exact Number

Find out the exact number required for the university teaching. And you have to keep that number at the top. After that number, you have to come up with food, hostel and other expenses. This number will be floating. And one has to keep that number added to the base tuition fee. This way one can get an idea of how much one needs to save. You can see that the more exact number you have. It is going to be easier for you to save funds for the same. Come up with some exact numbers you can and you get the idea of how much total education is going to cost you.

University

As much as we think it's not relevant, but university does matter. Many people who are looking for good course and university need to do that carefully. Because in lot of universities affiliated colleges are not going to be any good. Most of the content of the university is hardy even worth the money being paid. So in such case it is always a good option for people to check where they want to get the education. Find out good and bad sides of learning in particular place. And then decide if the tuition in one of those places is worth that. Saving for that tuition then will be mentally justified.

Loan

Many banks and the insurance companies offer loan for the educational duration. They don't cover the tuition fee for the amount where the student has the year gap. In such case it helps if the students are working inside the campus. This way they can save some money to pay back the money to the loan company. Do understand that working earlier in your career definitely helps you case. Loan is not going to be easy if your and parents financial condition is not so good. Many people have realized that they can only take loan they can afford. And taking it more than capacity is not good for their financial life.

Installments

Saving some money in short installments for the education is much better option. You'd find that installment based saving is the way to go. You can save a lot of interest on loan by making the installment based savings. You may have to understand that some of the companies and banks also allow this sort of option and they don't charge much. But if you are saving for education early years of child or for yourself. Then in such case you'd have to get it through bank savings. As that option is likely to save a lot of your money later. So make sure that you are much focused in the money this way.

Keep it simple

Education is expensive. And you have to avoid complexity with the education and saving. This way you can focus more on the education of yourself or the child. And in the process you are likely to have the money in the bank too. So start early, keep things simple with the investments. And slowly compounding the money into the bank is much better option for the education. This may take a lot of time in your life. So it is always better to keep things organized. Save some portion ahead of time. This way you are less likely to get into trouble financially. And education for kids or for yourself would come in financially stable position.

These are some of the things that one should know while saving money for the education. You can add more things to this list. But this is just meant to give you an idea of how the educational expenses should be viewed.

Great post. I have yet to further my education past Grade 12 diploma which just shows I finished all my schooling, regular school that is. I have not due to cost. The cheapest thing I have found is an online school or distance school in Canada and some courses are $800-$1000 and you get a diploma at the end, study at home own pace. I am worried some may not be accredited or some jobs might not see them as fit I guess since its not the same as attending a university. I have considered trying free stuff on Udemy but I am not sure if its worth my time.

If you want university credit for your course, then following two sites are definitely worth checking out.

1. CourseRA: https://www.coursera.org/

2. Udacity : udacity.com

These two sites have university credit of US based universities.

If you are into coding then following course on udacity can be good option;

https://www.udacity.com/course/data-ana ... a4#pricing

Udemy, teachable and other may not be giving university level credits.

Very cool! I never heard of those sites. I have some interest in coding but not sure if it is enough to turn it into a career, but I am thinking about it :). Thanks I will be checking these out.
