How to Answer: How you work well with People?

Postby grecy0905 » 09 Mar 2017, 22:02

Human resource personal always ask questions about you work well with people. This is asked not because they want to know if you are friendly or anti-social. It is asked because you need to remember that you are working with different kinds of people in the company. Your future company wants to know how you able to engage with people with different cultures and attitude. They want to know how you will manage different situation where you will need to understand the differences of everyone else. Remember these things before you answer the question.

You always answer you are People Person
If you are introvert, you do not have to fake it just to answer the question. Being introvert doesn’t mean they will never get along with other people. Introverts might be independent and are likely to spend time alone focusing on their job responsibility but it doesn’t mean they are not open to talking with another co-worker. It has a different way to answer this question. You need to tell that you are independent but you prefer learning with different kinds of people. You are always open to fresh ideas and you can only get it when you start talking to your teammates professionally.

The same with the case of a team oriented person. Just explain why you love talking with people and getting to know them well. The reason should be always being about your growth as a professional. Remember, employers don’t want someone who always have a conflict with people. They want someone not to friendly but able to handle different types of attitudes and work philosophy. They are more open to know how you can adjust and work with them.

Employers want to know how to you do that
When you already answer, you are open to be part of a team with a diverse individual, they also want to know what process you do to achieve that. Specifically, the employer wants to ask how do you build rapport with your co-employee. How do you assess their different personality? How are you open to group discussion and sharing your ideas? If you are in a team, how do become a team member or a leader? How do you manage training with them? How will you inspire them? How you will adjust to the changes that you need to face with them? You need to explain it in a clear manner so that you can prove that you are really open to adjusting yourself in different environment at work.

Prepare a detailed example
When you are having a draft to answer this type of question, it needs to be in detailed form. You can use the pattern by answer what, when and how. This guide will help you to relay a situation from your past job to prove you are a people person. It will also show how effective you are as an individual in the company. You are not only effective working alone, you could also be in the middle of a team either a member or the leader. It targeted both you and the future team you will be in.

well I must admit that you are experienced in this trade. I had problems with communicating with my seniors because I found they often abused their authority

I do have problems with people too to be honest. I don't like people talking behind your back and one HR manager told me that we cannot avoid that kind of people. We just always need to be professional even it is happening.

I am not a people person much to be honest so I lie during interviews. I let them know I work well in groups and on my own. My greater strength is working alone but in all my years of going to interviews I see rarely any jobs that are okay with that. I am very kind though and do my best to work with others, sometimes not easy though.

On that question I would speak to some strong points. Think of your leadership ability--do you lead any regularly scheduled meetings? Team player--were there any working groups that you were a part of? Perhaps you assisted another area to help them process work correctly. From time to time there are changes to work processes. Perhaps you collaborated with the technology group to test upgrades or transitions to new platforms. Perhaps you dealt with difficult people around the organization to get them on board to meet reporting deadlines. Relationship management--perhaps you made client visits to explain the reports and put a face in front of the numbers. Draw upon your experience and relate it to the question. Talk about the contributions you have made both internally and externally to the organization. Talk about recognition --talk about any awards you have received for working well with people.

As much as you want to present your best self at interviews, it's also worthy to note that these are trained HR professionals who can easily spot a fib when they see one. So while trying to present your self as the perfect candidate, don't attempt to go all overboard to cover up. If you don't work well with people, then don't apply for a position that entails you working with people. It will make everyone miserable in the long run.

I remembered my sister was asked a question during a banking job interview: What would you do if a customer is complaining loudly at the counter?

" Bring him/her out for a cup of tea", she answered.
I not sure if this is a good answer.

But, she got the job.

These are good points, sis grecy...thanks for sharing. I don't like interviews much because I always feel so exposed, and questions that put me on the spot are my worst nightmare. But I really like this one, because I can genuinely, hand on heart say I'm a people's person. I like people and find it easy to get along with most when the situation calls for it LOL So if I'm asked this, I answer it from my heart.

For sure there are some reason why she got the job, not only that smart answer. Congrats to your sister.

I remember my answer before was very honest. I said I like to work with different people, but if a person don't like me, I will not push myself to make friends with them. I let them fly by and let it happen in the right time.

Well,I think without even being asked at an interview we should try to always be a team player that way we would building a formidable force for success as a group that will reduce rancour and stress by individuals.
