Mattel Destroyer of competition

Postby Netherrealmer » 02 Aug 2023, 16:04

In a world where most people stopped making Toys Mattel is still making Billions of dollars. They are known for making He-man, WWE action figures,Magic 8 ball,Uno, Pollypocket, Hotwheelz and Barbie. Mattel is worth $7.53 billion but they are not contented. They are now making a Cinematic Universe and they started with Barbie. Soon they will make a Cinematic Universe out of their toys.

Mattel is known for destroying competition.

Barbie is not an original idea, Back in the 1940s, there was a doll called Bild Lilli, she is a prostitute/ secretary and she is popular to men. So Bild Lilli Dolls are marketed to men. Men buy these dolls because they are anatomically correct.

Image

Ruth Handler wants to always wanted to make Adult female dolls for little girls because during those dolls all dolls are baby dolls. So when She saw Bild Lilly while in vacation in Europe. She got an Idea. She nail pile the private parts of a Bild Lily doll, so its not sexual when its naked. Then use that as a prototype to make the first Barbie.
Image

You see alterations but obviously Mattel Plagiarized Bild Lilli. The creator of Bild Lilli tried suing Mattel for years but the sales of Mattel is so good that it became hard to for the Bild Lilli side.

The makers of Bild Lilli wants revenge against Mattel , So they created Miss Seventeen, A two feet tall doll to destroy Barbie and launch it in America. Well it is too heavy for little girls... so it flopped.
Image

Mattel is tired of being sued, So they decided to buy the rights of Bild Lilli.
---

The Next threat to Barbie is Cindee, Its a teenage doll from the UK.

Image

Cindee became a threat to Barbie because it has a softer face, The Barbies based from Bild Lilli have a bitchy face. So they decided to make Barbie look softer.

Image

Then Suddenly Cindee dolls became adults, and Looks like the new Barbies. Mattel sued creators of Cindee. They won the case.

Then Hasbro made a Cartoon series called Jem and the Holograms, Which is about a Rockstar who always have her life in danger... as in every episode is an assassination attempt.

Mattel send spies to Hasbro and they found out Jem dolls will be launched in a year.

Image
If you buy a Jem doll, it comes with a cassette tape. Mattel knows Jem is a threat, so They launched Barbie and the rockers 6 months before the release of Jem dolls.
Image

Kids eventually got tired of Jem dolls because Barbie have more Jobs. Jem is only a rockstar.

The next thread in the 90s are the Bratz dolls, These prostitute with head tumor looking dolls destroyed Barbie in the early 2000s. Little girls cant get enough of these prostitutes with tumors. Little girls from the 2000s called Barbie doll for grannies.
Image

Image

This is the most cruel thing Mattel did... They found out the creator of Bratz was a former employee of Mattel and he was still working for Mattel when he passed the patent of Bratz.Mattel won the case against him. Bratz lost a lot of money from the lawsuit, it is now marketed as a collectible for adults since they don't have budget for mass produce for children anymore.

The next threat is Disney princess
Image

Disney is more Powerful than Mattel so what Mattel did is make a deal with disney so they will be now the ones making Disney Princesses dolls.

Now Mattel just destroyed Disney in Movie box office.

Whenever a company wants to compete against Mattel, Mattel always have a way to cockroach itself and outlive the competition. Mattel is one of those evil companies you do not want to mess with.

Very interesting topic, I wasn't aware of the history behind those dolls. I suspect that most businesses that survive and thrive to the extent that Mattel did, are pretty ruthless and single minded when it comes to their competition and to protecting their own business interests.

Mattel is also known for suing toy creators who make toys similar to them. if they see you as a threat, they will destroy your life. If they put an interest on a toy you invented, you have no choice but to sell since messing up with mattel is scary.

Very interesting! It's interesting to know how Barbie came to creation. It's well said that there is nothing original, you hide the source and become the genius.
They have started making a mark in cinema with the recent box office hit Barbie.
It would be interesting to see how they make story with Magic ball and Uno. There is no character and weaving a story around that would be interesting.

This is very often practice. If we just look into IT sector Facebook bought Whatsapp so it can be more close to Viber Rakuten. Microsoft buy Nokia, Google buy Motorola.
Currently in IT we don't have just one big player on market like in Mattel case which is even better.

Interesting information on Barbie and other dolls. I never played with dolls, so I do not know anything. However, I did know about Barbie dolls (not the history, though)

Another way Mattel dominated the competition was from 1996 to 2009 when WWE action figures were created by Jakks Pacific. They produced exceptionally high-quality action figures. However, Mattel aimed to capture the boys' market, diversifying beyond Barbie. They successfully convinced WWE to part ways with Jakks Pacific and collaborate with them instead. Mattel promised to make action figures more affordable and easier to mass-produce. This move ultimately led to the decline of Jakks Pacific as an action figure manufacturer. Jakks Pacific had only one factory in the United States, while Mattel had factories in Mexico, China, and various other parts of the world

Mattel's entry into the WWE action figure scene was a real game-changer. Before, Jakks Pacific ruled the ring, creating top-notch figures that fans loved. But when Mattel stepped in, they brought a whole new energy.

A lot of companies destroy competition by creating a monopoly, or even a duopoly. THis is a common phenomenon in the business world. Mattle is not the only one.

Walmart's involvement in the acquisition brings in additional resources and expertise, potentially facilitating further growth and innovation within the Flipkart ecosystem.

It seems like the Barbie film did wonders for the brand. The fact that it tripled sales and was a hit at the box office suggests that it resonated with audiences.

Who doesn't love Barbie?

Barbie was created by Ruth Handler, who was inspired by German dolls and wanted to create something that represented girls' dreams and different lives. Many people saw it as a copy, but the creativity brought a big brand to the world.
