Mickey Mouse is now Public Domain

Postby Netherrealmer » 01 Jan 2024, 15:07

Disney wont be able to sue if you use this version of Mickey Mouse:
Image

Sell t-shirts with him on it you wont get sued at all. His creator is dead for 100 years, Usually characters becomes public domain if creator is dead for 70 years but in 2003 disney manage to extend Mickey. Now they cannot extend anymore. This version of Mickey though is not public domain as his designer is still alive

That's very interesting, Mickey Mouse is such a well loved and popular character. It would be surprising if people don't figure out ways to use it for making money, now that it is in the public domain. It would not be too difficult to create Mickey Mouse comics, books or even videos using AI and then to sell those on.

I hope that people do not use Mickey Mouse in a very different form than what it has been traditionally.
I would never like the "Horror" or other totally different "kinds" of Mickey Mouse.
Or if someone creates Mickey Mouse as an Army commando fighting evil folks, even that won't be right.

Interesting! I still have a soft spot for Mickey and Minnie Mouse. But I was always a HUGE fan of Mickey out of all the cartoonsn characters that I enjoyed. I used to have this oversized Mickey Mouse t-shirt that I absolutely adored. I wore it to its death. I too hope people maintain the brand integrity.

If a Mickey Mouse Bollywood movie comes along, it wouldn't be the first time beloved characters have taken on new cultural twists. The world of art and entertainment is always full of surprises.

In the case of Mickey Mouse, Disney has taken steps to protect its intellectual property rights and has been successful in extending the copyright protection for the character. While it's true that characters often enter the public domain after a certain period following the creator's death, it's essential to confirm the current copyright status of a character before using it for commercial purposes.

Mickey Mouse is public domain, perhaps I can capitalize on it by creating disfigured Mickey Moue and use the image on my merch, especially t-shirts.

I think a whole century is enough for an inventor and the person who bought a license of a particular art to make good money from such arts. Good that it is now public domain. This could sell T Shirts and caps in my country. Would suggest it to my cousin who does T Shirts printing.

I think the idea of losing copyright over a character after the passage of 70 years is not favorable to designers and creatives.
Suppose I create a character at age 13 and live to 90 years. This means I'll spend over ten years of my later life without enjoying control over such character. Not good.

No Your family will lose ownership and control of the character 70 years after your death. So if you created it at 13 you still have the rights at age 90. Its your grand children who will lose rights 70 years after you die.

how how how? is this serious? I mean I could use Mickey Mouse for some animated series I come up with and couldn't they sue me? This is fantastic news, many things come to mind, although surely some degenerate has taken advantage of it to create some Mickey Mouse rule 34, although I wouldn't be surprised if it already exists haha

The idea of Mickey Mouse entering the public domain has been discussed because the character first appeared in 1928, and copyright typically lasts for 95 years from publication under current U.S. law. However, Disney has successfully lobbied for extensions to copyright terms in the past.
