Popeye is now Public domain, thats why his chicken restaurant do not use his image anymore. After 95 years of existence, and his creator has been dead for 70 years so he is now public domain, Anyone can make a Popeye movie without lawsuits. So someone take advantage and makes a Popeye horror movie, where he become evil after eating bad spinach.

Yes if it is original, one would at least like the new feel that comes with originality.

Once a character becomes public domain, they lost their protection and dignity. Just imagine all the terrible cheap low budget movies that will come once Batman, Superman and Wonderwoman becomes Public domain. They are all become free once 2037 comes.
Poor Mickey Mouse, he is being exploited right now eversince he becomes public domain

The opposite depiction of the character of Popeye is a aimed at tarnishing the legacy of the age long character. Soon, fans that were used to the original legacy of the character would alienate themselves entirely from it.

I'm not really a fan of horror movies though but I think movie makers don't mind taking advantage of the mainstream fame of public domain characters for their interest

I think there should be a law that should restrain people from using a character in a complete opposite depiction after it has become public domain. Unless the entire legacy of some characters would be completely rubbished.
