Ways To Play
Think about what you liked to play as a kid and translate that into an adult activity!
Making homemade kites
I remember creating kites with sticks and grocery bags. We would watch jets and airplanes fly overhead too. I think that this activity got myself over the fear of flying to a few places as an adult. What was so neat is that while watching airplanes, we would guess where the airplanes were headed.
For example, were they headed for Pittsburgh? Cincinnati?
Got a library card
My first library card got myself prepared eventually into becoming a straight A English student and then into adulthood for accomplishing cookbook reviews.
Started a Christmas club
My mother took me to the bank when I was a kid and taught myself the meaning of managing money. She got myself started on a child’s bank Christmas club where I had to deposit such and such money every week for Christmas spending. When almost Christmas, I received the money to buy presents.
Playing badminton
I played badminton with an adult and was taught physical fitness and being healthy.
Playing house
I learned the meaning of having a clean and tidy house.
Playing doctor
This made myself prepared for ailments such as cuts, bruises, etc. I keep Band-Aids in my purse. I keep Pepto-Bismal in my purse. I keep ibuprofen in my purse. I keep cranberry tablets in my purse.
Playing cosmetologist/hair dresser
I played with men’s hair, women’s hair, women’s make-up and the people loved what I did. I personally ended up being told that I looked like Elizabeth Taylor the way I styled my own hair and make-up when I matured.!
Create a sport
I did not do this sport personally, but created this sport when babysitting! The kids loved the sport which I called “tennis baseball”. Just like playing baseball. However, you use a tennis ball instead of baseball and a tennis racquet instead of a baseball bat. We created bases around the yard. This taught the importance of being outside and getting fresh air.
Lawn Mowing
Such outdoor activity taught myself to keep a nice yard and to do alot of meditation with the sound of the mower.
Barbie
Kids these days grow up so fast. Playing Barbie let myself be a kid.
Finally, play is better for stress, relationships, energy, creativity, writing, confidence and ambition.
Being playful is attractive. Who doesn’t fall in love with people who make you laugh?
As Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, “Who said that there are too many children? That’s like saying that there are too many flowers”. So, go ahead and play! My personal motto? You only grow old if you want to!
