5 Potential Health Benefits of Microdosing Psychedelics

The practice of microdosing psychedelics has been gaining traction in recent years, with supporters claiming a range of mental and physical health benefits. Microdosing involves taking very small doses of psychedelic substances like LSD or psilocybin mushrooms - doses so low that they don't cause a full-blown psychedelic experience. While more research is still needed on this unconventional practice, here are five potential benefits that microdosers report:

1. Improved Mood and Reduced Depression/Anxiety

One of the most commonly cited benefits of microdosing is an improved sense of wellbeing and alleviation of depression and anxiety symptoms. Many microdosers report feeling more positive, motivated, creative, and focused after taking their micro-doses.

A study from the University of British Columbia gave microdoses of psilocybin to participants with anxiety and depression. After just four weeks of microdosing, participants showed significantly reduced levels of anxiety, depression, and mental distress compared to the control group. Researchers believe the psychedelics may help create new neural pathways and restore healthy brain circuits disrupted by depression and anxiety.

2. Increased Focus and Cognitive Performance

Microdosing supporters often report experiencing increased focus, creativity, and problem-solving abilities while microdosing. There are theories that psychedelics increase neuroplasticity and cause more connections to form between brain cells. This could potentially enhance cognitive skills like learning, memory, and information processing.

A placebo-controlled study from the Netherlands found that microdosing LSD led to modest but noticeable improvements in convergent and divergent thinking performance compared to placebo. The researchers suggested these results could be promising for individuals seeking to boost their creativity and analytical skills.

3. Increased Energy Levels

Many microdosers report feeling more energized and motivated during the days they take their microdoses. The psychedelics seem to provide a gentle, non-jittery energy boost without the negative side effects of stimulants like caffeine or amphetamines. The energizing effects may stem from psychedelics' ability to increase neurogenesis and neural connectivity in the brain.

4. Relief from Cluster Headaches and Migraines

Emerging research shows that psychedelic microdoses could potentially help prevent and reduce the severity of cluster headaches and migraines. Cluster headaches are brutally painful headaches that occur in cyclical patterns, and are considered one of the most painful conditions known to medicine.

In studies published in 2006 and 2011, researchers found that psilocybin and LSD were stunningly effective at aborting acute cluster headache attacks and keeping patients' cluster periods in remission. While these trials used larger doses, many cluster patients claim microdosing has similar preventative effects.

5. Increased Mindfulness and Present Moment Awareness

One commonly reported benefit of microdosing is feeling more "present" and grounded in the current moment. Microdosers often describe a subtle but noticeable impact on their consciousness - feeling more aware of their surroundings, less caught up in distracting thoughts, and better able to focus on tasks without mind wandering.

This heightened mindfulness could stem from psychedelics' ability to shift brain activity towards positive neurological patterns associated with meditation and present moment awareness. Research shows that psychedelics seem to decrease activity in the brain's default mode network, which is linked to mind wandering and self-focused rumination.

While research is still in its early stages, these potential benefits show why microdosing psychedelics is a trend gaining mainstream curiosity and scientific attention. Of course, microdosing is still legally restricted in most places, and more clinical trials are needed to prove microdosing's efficacy and safety. But the reports from current microdosers suggest psychedelics could have profound benefits when taken in small, non-trippy doses.

Interesting. I heard about a clinical trial in Australia using mushrooms to help people who were dying- not to cure them, to help them work through their feelings about their impending death. That wasn't microdosing though, it was a huge dose of psilocybin.

Unfortunately it's illegal to use psilocybin here, even microdosing. It is allowed for some medical treatments though.

I've been reading a lot about the potential of microdosing, especially for mood and anxiety. What's striking is how many people say it helps them stay present and emotionally balanced, without the intensity of a full trip.

That said, legality is definitely a big barrier depending on where you live. In the UK, I've actually seen people turn to medical cannabis prescription through clinics like Releaf, especially for chronic pain, anxiety, or sleep. It's not psilocybin, obviously, but for some it offers similar benefits, calm, focus, better mood, within a legal framework and with proper guidance. They even deliver it to your door, which is wild compared to how hard it is to access most alternative treatments.

Would be interesting to see how things shift in the next few years as more research (and regulation) catches up.

I love psychedelic mushrooms, I always look at for cow poop on the bushes, in hopes psychedelics grow on them.
