Things That Surprised Me as a New PC Gamer

I started PC gaming just about one month ago. I do not yet have my own gaming computer. I have been playing from my friend’s PC as I try to save and buy mine. At first, I just wanted to try for fun. But what I have seen so far has surprised me in many ways. Some things are good, others a bit hard, but all have helped me learn more about this new world of computer gaming.

I want to share my honest experience so far. Maybe it can help someone who is also new, or thinking of starting soon.

Games Look So Real Like a Movie

The first thing that shocked me was the graphics. I remember the first time I played a racing game called Forza Horizon. I paused the game just to look around. The roads, the sky, the cars, even the dust — everything looked too real. It felt like I was watching a real race.

I used to play games on my phone. But now I see computer gaming is another level. It is beautiful, but it also needs a strong computer. Some games did not work well on my friend’s PC until he changed the settings to low. I have now learned that for good graphics, you need good hardware.

There Are Too Many Games

I did not know that PC has so many games. I thought I would only find games like FIFA, GTA, and Call of Duty. But after opening Steam and Epic Games stores, I saw thousands of games — small games, big games, free ones and also paid ones.

There are games I had never heard of before, like Stardew Valley, Valheim, and Hades. I downloaded a few to try, and now my problem is not money — it is time. I want to play all of them but I cannot. It is exciting but also a bit confusing when you are new.

Keyboard and Mouse Are Not Easy at First

When I started, I thought I would just use keyboard and mouse the same way I use my phone. But I was wrong. My fingers did not know where to go. In shooting games, I pressed the wrong keys all the time. I even shot myself in one game because I pressed the grenade button by mistake.

But after about one week, I started learning slowly. Now I am getting used to it. In fact, I now enjoy keyboard and mouse more than a game controller. It is fast and helps me aim better in games.

Games Are Very Big to Download

This one was a big surprise. I tried to download GTA V and it was more than 90 gigabytes. I did not believe it. In my place, internet is not fast and it is also expensive. My friend told me he sometimes waits two or three nights just to finish downloading one game using night data.

So, if you are planning to start PC gaming in Africa, prepare for big downloads. Try to use Wi-Fi where possible or download overnight. Also make sure you have enough space on your hard drive.

People Use Gaming PCs for More Than Playing

Before, I thought a gaming PC is just for playing games. But now I have seen people do more. Some record videos while playing. Some teach others how to play. Others even stream live on YouTube and get followers and money.

It made me think, maybe in the future I can do something like that when I get my own PC. I can try recording or even teaching others who are just starting. Gaming can be more than just fun.

The Gaming Community Is Very Friendly

Another surprise for me was how helpful other gamers are. I joined some Facebook and Reddit groups. When I asked questions, people answered nicely. Some even gave me links to free games and settings to make games run better.

I used to think people online are rude, but in gaming groups, I found good people who support each other. It feels like being part of a big family, even if we do not know each other in real life.

Upgrading Never Ends

I thought once you buy a gaming PC, everything is complete. But I learned that people are always upgrading — more RAM, better graphics cards, new cooling systems. It is like building a house slowly.

For now, I just hope to buy my first PC soon — even if it is not very strong. My plan is to start small and upgrade little by little. What matters most is enjoying the games and learning as I go.

Final Words

My first month in PC gaming has been full of lessons. I have failed in some games, pressed the wrong buttons, and waited long hours to download. But I have also had fun, learned new things, and made new online friends.

If you are planning to start PC gaming, do not wait for everything to be perfect. You can begin by using someone’s PC like I am doing. Ask questions, try different games, and enjoy the journey. Just start — and you will be surprised too.

I haven't really played any game on pc besides using a nintendo GameCube and PSP emulator on my system to pay a game or two. I would really love to experience playing PC games. I need a new PC for that.

A lot seems revolving in the gaming industry. Being a fresher I don't know much but as time goes I will get to know where and how.

Then that is good. Some old games are worth playing and replaying. I think I will have to rest some oldies.
