I failed DIYing fixing my smart phone

Postby Netherrealmer » 09 Aug 2025, 13:25

My phone screen cracks, so I do the “responsible” thing — order the exact replacement for my model. I even watch this smug little tutorial video where everything looks so easy, like some magical two-minute arts-and-crafts project.

Then reality hits. My fat, clumsy fingers are wrestling with this microscopic ribbon connector that refuses — REFUSES — to lock in. In the video, they make it look like child’s play. In real life? It’s like trying to thread a needle while wearing oven mitts.

Of course, repair guys don’t struggle because they’ve got tweezers — which, surprise, I don’t own — and hands trained in the black magic of making tiny parts snap together. Now I’m stuck. Either I admit defeat and hand it over to a repair shop, or I just keep a $200 paperweight with a brand-new but useless screen.

The only silver lining? At least they can’t scam me with some “extra parts” charge, because I already bought the damn screen myself.

😂 lol sorry to hear that, at least you did not cause some extra damage in your attempt to do it yourself. Yes these videos often make it look a lot more easier, but they have so many years of experience backing them up.

If tweezers stuck you, buy them too. After all they are your DIY for other similar cases.

Lol but they won't tell you that, until you actually try it yourself and then you realize it.

There is that tweak they don't show you in the video. You should comment and ask them

We watched some videos about painting house and youtuber said great sentence: for what I need 3 hours, you will need 5 hours. I think it is same for your case.

It makes sense, those people took time to actually study and learn how to do that, you watching it once even if you are able to do it, it night not be as perfect as theirs.

I think tweezers is not enough, your hands has to be professionally trained, and also they use magnifying glasses.

Have you considered procuring those other tools like the magnifying glass?

Am sure one would still need a little bit of experience to be able to use them even when you have these tools.

Better search for related diys, may be someone else said it all without leaving a thing.. Most diys are half baked because the author needs to be hired to do the work.

LOL. The DIY videos do make you think "Any idiot can do this!" Until you try to do it and then ... it's like "I'm dumber than an idiot." I immediately admit defeat.

I actually succeed in some DIY videos. I was able to fix a broken electric fan and replace some PC parts because of those tutorials. But because their parts are, you know, something my big hands can handle. But I can't do it with phones because basically the parts of phones are very microscopic. It's hard to attach things and it's hard to detach things. The parts look vulnerable and sensitive that if I make a mistake I might destroy it.

Yea but fixing a full screen or a touch pad shouldn't be that hectic if at all the diy maker had said it all. Good you at least know that some diys are better
