ToTW Japan is planning to introduce bachelor tax to unmarried people.

Postby Netherrealmer » 19 Dec 2025, 04:52

Japan have a problem with population decline. You know, people do not want to have babies anymore. They will just have a fur baby, a cat or a dog, and that will be their baby. Even married couples are not having babies. And a lot of people do not want to get married because they think it's expensive. So Japan is now trying to make a plan to make being single expensive. They are now planning to add bachelor tax. Everyone who is an adult who is not married will have to pay a certain amount of tax, and you will only be freed from this tax if you are married and have children.

Tax will happen in April 2026. Every adult in Japan who is single and unmarried will have to pay tax that will deduct their salary. And the only way to get rid of this salary is to get married and have kids. Also, Japan is offering financial assistance to all parents per child to encourage married couples to, you know, have condom-free sex.

Japan is facing a population decline problem. Many people do not want to have children. They choose pets like cats and dogs as babies. Even couples do not have children because the expenses are high. Now the government wants to introduce a bachelor tax from April 2026. Singles will pay a tax and parents will be given financial assistance for each child to encourage procreation.

Then the assistance for marriage needs to be good.
Else it would mean public resentment against the incumbent government.

South Korea also have a problem with birthrate, so they are planning to pay US$29,000 to marry couple with children. This is annual, I think. To encourage more couples to have children.

I have seen the documentary of Sue Perkins in BBC Earth about Japan's issue with low population growth. A gov't agency is organizing a sort of Soiree for young single men and women. It is like a blind date of sorts with many participants. The host said that Japan is trying to increase the population growth with more marriages.

Marriage doesn't mean more children, though, because there are so many married couples with no children and chooses to have miniature dogs or have pet cats.

True. Marriage doesn't necessarily mean having many children; many couples choose to live childless. Others choose to have small dogs or cats as part of their family. Lifestyles vary, but marriage remains based on love and companionship. People remain happy without the pressure of having children and enjoy the company of their pets as an integral part of their daily lives.

Well, if they compare it to living expenses. They may still fork out the bachelor tax. It really depends on individuals. Not sure if it's that effective.

Giving people money to have a baby didn't work, and this won't work either. Single people will pay the tax and stay single.

Japan's population decline has become a hot topic in the world. The Japanese government is struggling to combat what it calls a "demographic crisis" where the number of elderly people is increasing while the number of young people is decreasing and not getting married.

The soirees or youth gatherings (known as Konkatsu) are part of the government's efforts to encourage relationships and fertility.

So the tax would force people to get married? But getting married does not always mean there will be an increase in birth rate

Best is to lower the cost of affordable medical care and schooling fees.
In India, we need to spend a very high amount monthly on School Fees as well as Medical needs of kids.

It remembers me Benito Mussolini's Italian government until the end of the Second World War. During his government, Mussolini introduced bachelor tax to all unmarried men having reached the legal age to marry, but stayed single. Such a shameful law destroyed enough women's life, as they got married with men who weren't family minded, but only wanted to get rid of the bachelor tax. It's to understand how expensive became to maintain a family. When we don't have enough money to pay the dentist for our children, obviously to plan a pregnancy is not the wiser thing to do.

But if there are millions of Japanese people, it's practically a miracle they could fit into that tiny country they have. To me, it's just another excuse for the government to steal, as always. No matter how many taxes they impose, if people don't want children, they won't have them. Besides, like I said, it's not like they're going to become extinct in a few years; there are millions of them. Honestly, that idea is disgusting. To me, it's just another stupid excuse for the government to steal, nothing more than that.

I just checked the official information, and it's not actually a "tax on single people" as some are saying. What Japan will implement in April 2026 is the Childcare and Parenting Support System. Basically, they're adding a surcharge to the health insurance premiums paid by all adults, whether they have children or not.

The average will be around ¥500 per month (approximately $3.50) for salaried workers, although it depends on income. There will also be smaller contributions for the self-employed and retirees. The money raised will be used to fund subsidies for families with children, childcare, and financial assistance for each child.

The controversy arises because those without children feel they are paying without receiving direct benefits, which is why it's being called a "tax on single people" on social media. But in reality, the government isn't forcing you to get married or have children to avoid paying; it's a solidarity contribution that affects all adults.

In short: it's not a punishment exclusively for single people, but a surcharge on health insurance to finance policies against low birth rates.

Now, I totally support having sex without a condom! In fact, it's normal, but always accompanied by testing for sexually transmitted infections for both partners. 8-) <3

Actually, they are close to extinction because no babies are being born and most people are senior citizens. They are indeed threatened.

It would be funny if a country went extinct due to a lack of children. I mean, thinking about the absurd situation in reality, it wouldn't be funny. I don't think they're going to have the problems they seem to have. I think there will continue to be people who have children despite their supposed problem of not having children.

Japan is actually close to extinction so does South Korea. There is a village in Japan where there's no more people anymore, and there is a school in Japan that closes down because there's no more students. Japan really need more children at this moment.
