Difference between Stock ROM and Custom ROM in android

Postby naruto100 » 21 Oct 2016, 12:20

Android is open source mobile operating system. So developers can do lot more changes to have different things on normal android phones. Well, on our android phone we can have stock ROM and custom ROM depending on our need. But yes for custom ROM one needs to root their android phone first to install it. So it is not easy thing to do. So let’s learn about difference between stock ROM and custom ROM on android.

What is stock ROM?
Each and every android phone comes with pre installed android operating system from its mobile company. This android operating system which comes by default from company can be called stock ROM of that mobile phone. Different mobiles can have different kind of stock ROMs depending on mobile company.

What is Custom ROM?
Now as I said above android is open source operating system. So developers can do changes in this stock ROM and develop another android operating system by doing many customization changes on it. This modified or new version of android can be known as Custom ROM.

What is the difference?

Bugs: Stock ROM will not have more bugs in most the cases. While custom ROM can have more bugs on it. It is hard to find stable custom ROM for most of the phones. So that means stock ROMs are more stable than custom ROM.

Customization options: Well, most of the stock ROMs doesn’t have more customization options in compare to custom ROM. While custom ROMs can have lot more customization options depending on developer.

Security: As stock ROMs are more stable; they are more secure than custom ROMs. I am not saying all custom ROMs are insecure. But yes many of them can be risky.

So this is it. This is the main difference between them. I will tell you about advantages and disadvantages about the same with my next article. You can always comment below if you have any query or to have discussion about this topic.

Your post is interesting. Android is from Google so nexus and pixel will have unmodified versions of Android OS. But in case of other manufacturers, they tend to use their UI on top of it. Will affect the OS performance in anyway. If their customized UI is used, which memory does it occupy. Also where are the APPs that we install will run from?

Exactly. Android being open source means developers have access to its source code, so they can modify the stock ROM (the default operating system that comes pre-installed on a device) and create a Custom ROM.
