ToTW CandleThoughts.com opinions please?

Postby Fergal » 07 Feb 2025, 06:23

I've created a new site at https://candlethoughts.com/

What do you think of it? Is it something you would use?

When you visit the site, is it clear to you what it does and what you can do to light a candle?

Do you have any suggestions on how to improve it?

Thanks in advance for your feedback?

For someone like me, this is my first time coming across a site like this, so am not used to this, but i think the idea is great. It might take some getting use to, but i feel its a cool way to honor those we love that we have lost or is going through something.

Is this totally free? After about how many days would the candle be removed?

@Fergal, you are so very thoughtful and thank you.

Thanks for your helpful replies, much appreciated.

Yes it is totally free to add a candle, I will probably add something to the site to clarify that. I don't know exactly how long the candles will remain there. I may not actually remove them at all, perhaps I'll add an archive page for candles lit in the past. For now, I will see how it goes and how popular it becomes.

Further feedback and suggestions would be most appreciated.

And of course, you are welcome to light your own candles on the site.

Yes i think it would be good if they don't disappear after awhile. It would give people a feeling like their loved one is still remembered even after awhile.

Your candlethoughts site is refreshingly simple and its idea is clear. When you enter, you know for sure that it is a platform for lighting digital candles and sharing your thoughts or feelings. This concept is unique and can attract people who love the symbolism of candles. The design is clean but you can add a few visuals or small animations so that the user feels more connected.

Another suggestion is to add an option to share candles directly on social media so that the message gets across. You can also add different categories of candles for moods or occasions. A Chinese proverb says that one candle can light up an entire house. This site of yours can be that candle for people who are looking for comfort online.

I really like the concept because it's such a thoughtful thing to do. I clicked around to get a feel of it but found I was a little nervous I'd do something wrong  @Fergal, I wonder if a FAQs tab would address this and other questions such as how it works?

At a glance it has gone over my head. A bit more explaining what it is all about and how one goes about lighting candles would be welcome

But it looks like a unique idea only you could think of Congratulations .

I just came across this one.
Looks like a cute and swift site.
So how did you design it?
Ajax or PHP or some other technology?

Thank you ptrikha21, the site is mostly HTML and CSS. There is a little PHP for submitting the form, but the rest of it is all HTML.

So you save data in database or somewhere else? Maybe even remove PHP and save it into some JSON file.

Hi mrki444, no the details are not saved in a database. They are emailed to me by the PHP form sender script.

So submited data are first on approval until you post it. Maybe some automated system should be better when it gets bigger number of posters.

Thanks mrki444, yes all submissions are reviewed before they appear on the site. Yes, I agree with you that would be the next requirement of the site if it is to grow, visitors would need to be able to submit their messages quicker / directly.

So how many pages did you keep? Any particular folder or file structure?

Thanks for your question ptrikha21, no the site is super simple. It is just the index page, a CSS style sheet and the script for submitting the form.

The site doesn't save or store any data. When a visitor fills out the form the details are sent to my email. There is no database on the site storing data.
