My Story: You Don't Need To Be Wealthy

Postby Spontaneo » 28 Aug 2025, 22:12

There are ways that food can be used. There are different ways that food can be seen, some good and some bad. Below are some personal examples:

In elementary school, my mother would pack myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in my lunch box. Then, I ended up working in the cafeteria and received a free lunch.

I grew up on homemade pasta, garden salads, and handpicked mushrooms, and homemade desserts such as raspberry squares! We also had homemade jelly.

Then, we ate lunchmeat sandwiches, such as pepperoni and salami with lettuce on good Italian bread.

We were poor and that is how we survived.

Next, when I was younger, my boyfriend and I ate alot of pizza from a mom and pop pizza shop. The pizza was authentic as when you ordered, you either said red or you said white. The pizza was inexpensive. You would think that I would become fat from all of such pizza, but I stayed slim, fit and healthy.

Some people were jealous. Instead of being jealous, all that the people needed to do was ask how I stayed healthy. I could have taught.

There were a few girls who did appreciate myself. The girls wanted to save a few bucks and borrowed my prom gowns.

Then, there were people years ago who were not loved ones, not friends, but were acquaintances that took myself out to dine and charged the meals on credit cards. I did not have a credit card. To myself, credit cards are bad. I felt awkward with these people. But, I was taught to be polite. Why did the people want to feed myself? Do you have any clue?

I believe that people should be taught how to cook and bake as is a life skill. You know what you are consuming, you save money, you can teach others and you can have meals with loved ones. I taught myself how to cook once I moved out on my own. I borrowed cookbooks from the local library and bought cookbooks from yard sales.

I began with a Crock-Pot, graduated to the microwave, then tackled the air fryer. If I can do it, so can you!

Finally, remember, we need to eat to live, not live to eat. Consume enough food to keep all parties satisfied. All about moderation. For example, I love sweet tea. However, I was pouring 2 cups of sugar in each pitcher. My family physician said to only use 1 cup of sugar. He didn’t scold, just used moderation.

You don’t have to be wealthy. I hope that my story inspires you.

You have provided a lot which we can follow with regards to Diet and health.
Yet often we end up expecting too much and leave discipline aside.
Discipline is what can take us forward in a big way.

It depends on what one interprets as wealthy. I am not wealthy I can't even guess the answer.

It is true that eating is the fuel of life, not life itself. We eat to keep us alive and to keep our bodies running smoothly. If you overeat, it is like filling a car with too much fuel. Balance is everything.

A Chinese proverb says that a small plate can fill a big heart. It is an Indian metaphor like a curry with many spices but must be cooked in moderation so that the taste remains sweet. Moderation is the secret to lasting health and happiness.

About every week and weekend, I prepare for myself soup and sandwiches. The roommate has a bad stomach problem and can only cnnsume what she can.

However, for Sundays, we plan a luncheon for the roommate, her boyfriend and myself to have. I do all of the cooking.

When you know what you eat you have clear control over your health and you also save money because there is no guess work. You know your ingredients and portions, so there is no overspending or buying unnecessary things. That transparency gives you confidence and makes your lifestyle balanced and sustainable. Saving becomes natural and your health remains stable.

What matters is to remain happy. My thinking it is not how much one has but what one makes of what one has is the route to happiness

A couple of years ago, we started to receive bags of lentil from a food pantry. I had never prepared or consumed lentil before and would give the lentil away. Then, out of curiosity, I googled lentil and how to prepare. Totally simple! So, ever since, I get out the Crock-Pot and prepare lentil atleast once a week.

This past week, I had tuna sandwiches.

Don't get myself wrong, I love to cook, but love some grab-and-go quite often.

For example:

lunch meat sandwiches
chicken salad sandwiches
egg salad sandwiches
etc.

;) ;)

Very true, cooking helps you save more. You could cook something that would carry you for the day or two, meanwhile that money might go for just a small plate in a restaurant.
