What's the average lifespan of your pets?

Postby Netherrealmer » 02 May 2026, 14:43

Usually, dogs, I think, have the average lifespan of 12 years, but my oldest dog is 16 years old. He's a Labrador. I used to have American bulldogs and pit bulls, but I stopped having those breeds because they usually die at age 5. I don't know why. Even though, you know, I give them the medical attention and everything, bulldogs and pit bulls have short lifespans for big dogs. Miniature dogs are shockingly long-life animals because mine is 18 years old. Mutts, or you know, mixed-race dogs, they also live long. Mine is 17 years old already. The shortest lifespan dog I ever had is a puppy who died at age 6 months because of, I forgot the name of the disease, but the poor puppy licked off the rusty gates and she died from it. When it comes to cats, I think my cats are now 8 years old. My longest living cat is 18 years old. I heard the average lifespan of cats is 13 years old. So I guess I am good with cats. My donkeys are now 5 years old. I heard their average is of 30 years old. I want to try a turtle because I heard they can live for centuries.

Wow, an 18-year-old cat!! I grew up with cats and dogs but never really tracked their age or made note of their lifespan. It's always so sad when you lose a pet. I haven't had a pet of my own in a while because I don't have the space. I always feel dogs in particular need a lot of room and outside time. So I'll wait until we move to a house with a garden to get a dog. And when I do, it'll be a big dog with a long lifespan  I couldn't have a hamster, whose lifespan is up to 3 years max.

I have chickens, which can live for 10 years or so. My current eldest is 10.

I've had snakes before, which live for around 20 years.

I've had pet rats and they only live a couple of years (2-3 usually). It's just long enough to get very attached to them so it's really sad when they die. I imagine having a possum is similar.

How did you ever cope with having a snake as a pet? Did you remove it's venom? What about feeding habits? It's scary if you ask me.

Depends on the pet. A rat might live two years. A cat might live 15-20. A large dog might live eight; a small dog might live longer than the cat. A gray parrot might grow old with its owner's new baby!!!

Or any of them might not, unfortunately. A lot of people don’t take good enough care of their pets, and even when they do, accidents can happen. :(

For dogs, after 4 years do they grow old and die?

No. Have you never had a dog? They usually live 10-12 years. They can live longer, depending on the breed and the kind of life they have (how well they are looked after etc.).

Edit- oh I realised too late you were asking about his specific pets, sorry. Shouldn't be old age they were dying of at 4 though.

They were pythons. They don't have venom. They are constrictors- that is they kill their prey by squeezing it. Only a couple of species of constrictor would be large enough to be a danger to humans.I kept smaller pythons, a species than only grows to be a little over a meter long. They eat rats. Not scary at all, less likely to be a danger to humans than a dog.

How often did you have to feed them? Did you buy dead rats from a pet supply store?

That's still scary to me, i even fear the babies as well. I guess you don't let them hunt for the rats, but you get it for them?

Yeah, you can buy the rats dead and frozen and keep them in the freezer. You thaw them out before feeding them. How often depends on the size of the snake. My pythons usually ate once a week. Once they were fully grown they could eat a full sized rat. Younger snakes eat baby ones.

I don't have any pets, but I like dogs and I do know their average lifespan is around 10 to 13 years.
