Resume or Curriculum Vitae is defined by Google as a brief account of a person's education, qualifications, and previous experience, typically sent with a job application. When we mean brief, it should be short. An application more than two pages is too much unless you have a lot of credentials that you have to mention. I have read a lot of resumes. I noticed several items in the existing format that I think is unnecessary anymore. I would like to enumerate some that might be helpful for interviewers to understand your application the way you want them to.
Objective
We can omit this part as we are guilty of searching the net for a proper objective. It is very obvious that your objective is to land a job. This is my favorite initial interview question. I will rephrase the objective and let them explain and enumerate the skills that they are showcasing as written in their objective. A wrong explanation might ruin your application.
Educational Background
If you are a fresh graduate or someone who did not finish tertiary level, you can put your secondary level details. If you are a high school graduate, you can put your elementary level details. But if you are a professional you may remove both. You will never be admitted in the tertiary level if you did not finish both. Therefore, it is not necessary to include that in your resume. But you may also do so if you graduated from a prestigious school and you want to include that piece. Just make sure that you can give justice to it.
Employment Background
Analyze your employment background. Put those that are related to the position you are applying for. If you have undergone training in a certain company and did not finish, do not put it anymore. Watch out on the format of dates. If you used month and year in the first experience, everything should also be on the same format.
If you wish to put in job description, make it concise. Do not put everything as you will not have anything left to discuss during the interview. If you have the same job responsibility in all of your experiences, it will be better that you separate the heading rather than being redundant. You may use “Skills” or “Core Competencies” as heading.
Skills / Core Competencies
If you put something under these categories make it short and easy to understand. Put in mind that the best people can express their skills in one or two words. See to it that you mention different kinds of skills that fall on these categories: Clerical, Technical (computer skills), Leadership, Management, and people related skills. A pinch of those is perfect combination. Do not put "I am willing to be trained” or even mention in the interview. You are talking to a company representative. They are hiring the most competent applicant in town, not those who are looking for training. You may want to go to school for training. They do not have time to train thoroughly. You should already be equipped upon entering. Being highly resourceful in doing a task may be a better answer.
Personal Data
In United States, they are not allowed to put personal data in their application as this might be a reason for discrimination. But here in the Philippines, where family is considered primary, we are looking at family background. I would advice that if this is asked during the interview you may answer but you may not include these in your resume. Your basic information will do, age, sex, marital status. Proofread not just once but several times. Check for grammar errors, consistency in formats, your complete address, correct email address and contact numbers.
Lastly, keep your lines open. Check your email every now and then. Since you have given your contact number I hope you won’t mind answering calls from unknown numbers.
