When Should You Take Your Blog Seriously?

Postby WorkAtHomeGal » 03 Apr 2017, 17:50

Blogging has become a pretty big phenomenon and more people seem to be getting on the bandwagon so to speak. I can still remember when I found out someone who I gamed with on Facebook had a mommy blog. At the time I was not sure what all that met but I at least found some cool recipes on her blog. People who I started to admire in the work at home community also were running successful websites and blog and from there I fell in love. But let's get down to business for a minute, how many people do you know who blog? And how many are taking it seriously?

The thought of taking blogging seriously might be scary for some people. There is a lot of people who blog and don't make income from it because they don't know how. Those are the people who got genuinely interested in just blogging about a passion in most cases. And then there are people like me who have tried out numerous topics and let the blog die, not good!

The first thing to decide is what you want out of this blog. Is this just a spot to share ideas, maybe vent. Or perhaps you want to sell a service and share words of wisdom and attempt making money from it. Most blogs I stumble into that are successful are making money some how. It may not be always in your face because some people don't flood their page with advertising space but instead sell a service or product.

I have been blogging on and off now since 2009 or so and the same thing would always happen. Due to lack of motivation or outside job interference I could never seem to get it all down. In most cases I wasn't posting enough content but also was not promoting my blog enough and building a name for myself. In the work at home community I try to do that by posting honest comments to forums and sharing information when I can. I learned a lot and I know it can take a long time to get anywhere with blogging and the money part.

When Should You Take Your Blog Seriously?
Gaining an audience is a big step and once you get that audience it might be a good time to start developing a plan to keep them coming back. My goal and dream has always been to be a writer and for me having a blog lets me work on that in a small way without being published or widely known. I know that my readers is a small audience due to me only using certain traffic methods to get viewers and only free methods.

My advice if you start out a free blogging platform like I have chose to do, in time if you keep things updated and notice comments or maybe even people contacting you through email or social media, this might be a good time to expand. In the future I do plan on getting a domain name because it will look much more professional then using blogger. Plus it will make me feel more business like and might even make me smarten up and take things more seriously.

Here is a quick list of when to take it serious
* Your readers have established a large following and you don't want to let them down.
* You are well organized and making list and ideas.
* You already planned to make this into something but lose motivation, try stepping up to the task and refresh and re do! See if it gets better!
* You want to quit your day job and turn your blog into your FULL time job.
* Your blog is making you some money and now you want to grow it!
* You love what you blog about, so keep going.

This list could go on and you know why? Because we all have different reasons as to why we will or won't take our blogs seriously. I can raise my hand and embarrassingly say I have stopped blogging about old niches because I wasn't making money. Sure, and I also wasn't educated how to get traffic. I am no guru by any means but I can tell you with a lot of hard work and building a positive image of yourself and your blog online you in time will find an audience and if you choose can make some money. I am not going to say a full time income because that is hard but it does happen for some people.

Something to remember though that some bloggers are not making much from their blog, maybe they make more selling an ebook series for example but use the blog as a place for people to find them. See there is tons of reasons why people blog.

Don't forget though just because you decide to take blogging seriously it doesn't mean you need to hugely focus on money. A lot of people who start might be a stay at home parent or might work full time and do the blog as a hobby and that is okay! If someday it happens your blog can support you then awesome but don't put a big wish on it. I say this because I think all bloggers who are making money will agree with me that it is hard and takes a lot of effort, commitment and time but most important patience.

I have a lot of patience luckily and try not to think of money much but just the joy of loving what I do. That can help a lot to start blogging with a love for it and not a love for money.

I have blogs too but I failed to maintain it because when some writing sites appear, I rather work on those sites than on my own blog. It only means I am not serious about it. Right now I am continuing it, the one that is not monetized. I need to start from zero again on some of my blogspot and I need to do all from your lists and take it seriously. It is like a real knock on my head while reading it, I feel guilty. Thank you for another passionate writing.

Thank you for the nice comment :). I know how you feel I am guilty as charged too for letting blogs go. Sometimes it isn't motivation loss but finding a new site to work on, like how you mention joining a new writing site. It can be way to easy to get side tracked that is for sure.

I know I need to put more effort into my blog because I'm able to get a decent number of views every time I publish a new post. Unfortunately I tend to get my priorities confused and spend a lot of my online time on unimportant things instead of posting more frequently.

I'd also love to start a blog in a more popular niche. I tried doing a photography blog but quickly lost focus and posted on a few other things before leaving it idle. Perhaps I should try to revive it and delete some of the bad content.

I decided to go ahead and hit the ground running, taking my blog seriously right from the off because I knew if I 'dilly dallied' I'd probably procrastinate and take forever to come out of that funk LOL Also, my reasoning was that if I paid for a domain and web hosting I'd take it more seriously than if I went with a free service.

My focus is on building a loyal following before monetising my blog, and so far I'm happy with the way it's progressing. Of coz, we all want heavy footfall but we do have to work for it. I'm just happy to see that my blog's attracting the attention of people across the globe and just hope I can continue to retain their attention and loyalty and build on that :)

I have a blog but I rarely write there ... I guess I need some more motivation to move on with it, I think I know the reason as I don't have my own domain and it is not monetized, but my time right now is so short that it probably will stay as it is now for a few more months ...

@metsrock69 - Congrats on the views! It is better then nothing that is for sure. Trying more free traffic methods will probably get you more visitors I think. :)

@Gina145 - I know how you feel on this one! I easily get side tracked I find. Instead of setting an earning goal this month I made my goal be to post twice a week for the month of April to my blog. I think my problem too is not sitting down and pre writing stuff out. I use to do that and lost focus. You should revive the photo blog, I am thinking of reviving my gaming or craft one or maybe starting fresh due to bad content. I guess we will see.

@Angie10 - Actually this is a very good point! It is very possible that I take mine less serious because I am using blogger instead of paid services. I have visited your blog a few times and like what I see, it looks nice and professional. I need to get on that with mine, make it more professional looking. Good luck with your blog and I am glad you are happy with the results. :)

@nela13 - Time limits can make it hard when there is so much to do. I use to take 1 day a week to pre write stuff and get ideas but I lost motivation with it and never went back. I do feel for me as well having no domain makes me not as interested. I will just have to keep trying though.

If you're not going to take your blog seriously why bother to blog at all? Even if not for income why do something that's not productive? It's wasting time and time is precious.

I agree with your advice. Newbies and even experienced should test the waters using free blogging platforms. Here is something else that I would have done had I known about it when I first started trying to blog. I would have joined a blogging community. Only I did not know of any and also my daughter told me start a blog to complement my affiliate marketing website. But once I realized that blogs could also be a stand alone project, I decided to try using a free platform.

I have to say blogging certainly isn't something you do by halves! It is very involved and with working full-time hours, it can be hard to find the motivation to write around my busy schedule. But I continue to push myself because I feel like my readers know when I post each week and if I don't, they'll notice and not like it. I feel some might get fed up and never return!

you should take your blog seriously right from the start and build on getting a wider audience. Why start a blog if you don't intend to take it seriously in the first place.

@peachpurple - No problem. I am trying to do some content for me but it could use a new look I think as well.

@cmoneyspinner - I often get angry at myself when I fail to meet my posting commitments for my blog and then I do end up feeling like I wasted my time. But it is a learning curve too and all me and anyone else can do is keep trying.

@Angie10 - Yeah doing it in halves doesn't work well. And your reasoning to try and post weekly is good, to do it for the readers. I am sure with my frequent hiatus I have probably lost readers now and in the past. It is something I am trying to change though.

@ken alto - I am glad you found it informative. :)

@jumaandason - Very good point! Don't forget though that some people I think do their blog just to have a place to write and share thoughts and in some cases are not thinking of it as serious. We all have different reasons I suppose for blogging.

@Sydeli - Glad you enjoyed. Sometimes I just like to read blogs too and comment or follow the bloggers. I don't always feel like blogging. I try to combine both for one isn't taking up time over the other.

Good tips to know when to take your blog more seriously. I like the financial aspect the best. Making more money than you thought was possible or even what you made in prior periods or making any amount of money is a great reason for some people.

sure, those points are valid. The most point is if you quit your day job to make a living from a blog.you have to be very serious to make any thing tangible or else it might be a disaster waiting to happen

@Happyland...I also like the financial aspect, that's if I can monetise the blog and start laughing all the way to the bank hehehe. On a serious note though, I'm not sure I'm anywhere near that just yet. I'm looking into having partners in a couple of government agencies to boost our visibility and credibility but all the people in high places are so hard to pin down grrr! I guess I'm gonna have to be patient if this is to work.

Yes I thing patience is a part of the game. Another part is not to try to take on more than you can chew. Don't try to be good at everything or should I say write/blog about everything; instead, narrow the focus and find your ideal love and comfort zone. From there you can administer the best blogging project(s) you can muster. You will become more of an expert and be able to attract and grow a loyal following. Then you can begin to monetize if you choose. Connecting is a good idea. Be persistent and track then down. From what I have come to understand about you, you are already good at what you do. Just be consistently good and stay true to yourself no matter what direction you go in life. Best wishes :)
