Medium writers tend to discuss more serious topics that pertain to society in general like politics, etc. That's what I've noticed. As for Vocal, according to @MysticMoons. her articles about gaming generate income.

Gaming community is low on medium and vocal and you will find mostly the serious topics like religion and politics. Mostly medium is left wing so writing those topics would earn views.

Medium is one the few platforms where I can clearly express my political views. I will get responses or I will get ignored. But I have never been banned or had my account deleted.

That is one good thing about Medium they do allow political views. Vocal does not allow that. They allow nasty pics, and sex stuff, horror etc. Well not nude but Bikini pics. But political stuff is not allowed.
So Medium is better in that area.

@MysticMoons - Now that HUBPages has created the niche sites, I am wondering if I should try for a specific site. One of my article was actually picked by the Editors for a niche site. But only one. I have not written for HP for a while. I am thinking if I aim a specific niche site, my HUBs might earn more. I'm thinking. I have not decided yet.

Getting site featured in the niche site takes a lot of work and also your writing has to compliment that but if you get selected passive income for years.

Hubpages is good if you know how to send traffic to those pages. Most of the people earn pretty good from the hubpages.

There are some who only write for HUBPages and it is worth it too! But my personal experience with writing sites has made me cautious about putting all my eggs in one basket. That's why I keep trying new writing sites. My HUBPages experience though has been very good. I can't complain.

So it's not imagination. I also noticed that the CPM was better. I'm definitely going to get back to being more active on HP.

Yes hobby related niche sites are doing good with CPM. So I guess it must be one of those niche which can set things for passion.
