How to not ruin your nonstick pan

Postby Netherrealmer » 02 Oct 2021, 06:41

Non stick pans are awesome, they are easier to clean and you can cook things with less oil and fat. Some of them are even so slippery that you can fry eggs without oil. I use o have a pan that got discontinued called fat free express and that awesomeness can make french fries without oil. It was invented before air fryer is a thing.

With low heat, you can actually bake a pizza or a cake with a non-stick pan if you cook with low heat.

Non-stick pans are expensive but they are delicate, I had seen people who ruined their non-stick pans to the point they look like this. I wanted you to get your money's worth so I decided to write this article so you won't do my mistakes with non stick pans.
Image

You don't want that to happen to your non stick pan regardless of the brand because they are expensive. Here are some tips so your nonstick pan or pot will not lose its coating.

1. Do not use metal utensils.
Metal utensils can destroy the teflon or copper coating of your non stick pan. Even spoon and fork are not safe to use. Only use Silicone or Wooden utensils if you will use a non stick pan. Metals can scratch and destroy nonstick pans. I know a lot of college people loves cooking with spoons because they are too lazy to get a cooking spatula. I know a lot of tv commercials says they are scratch proof but those commercials are not true. Nonstick pans are sensitive even if they are coated with titanium and diamonds as advertised.

Teflon coating does not go well with metal. If you have plans to buy non stick pan, buy the proper utensils as well. I have a non stick pan that still works well after 7 years because all of utensils are not metal when I use non stick surfaces.

2. Do not use scouring pads and metal scrubbing pads to clean your non-stick pans

These things are enemies of nonstick cookwares. They can peel off the teflon. I just use the yellow and soft part of sponges like this and avoid the green. Soft sponges are enough to clean your expensive nonstick pan.

Image

A pure and soft sponge will be better but most sponge in the market is attached with a scouring pad. Avoid using that green side. Just use the soft side. If you have no option.

3.Do not cook in high heat- Things can burn or caramelize if you cook in high heat with non-stick pans. When things burn, the burn residues attaches with the teflon which ruins the non stick pan. If something sticks with your nonstick pan, soak it in water for hours and it will eventually detach. Use your nonstick pan with low to medium heat only. Also don't let the things inside burn. Overheating ruins non stick pans.

4.If you will use it for deep frying, use wet batter instead of breading. Dry breading can ruin non stick pans because the powder releases sugar that sticks with the coating.

5.Do not use nonstick baking spray to grease the pan. Just use normal oil. Spray oils have chemicals that can ruin your nonstick pan.

6. Tell the people on your household on what they can do and cant do with the pan, So if they use it they will not ruin it.

7. Wipe your pan dry after washing. It should be dry when you are not using it. Moisture can ruin the coating.

I bet if you have cast iron pan you will hide it from your sons because cast iron pans are not allowed to be soaped. You clean them with baking soda.

I don't use nonstick pans because of the toxicity of teflon coatings. I use steel or cast iron.

Despite all what I do and that which is mentioned in your article I feel they have their own longevity I notice they lose that teflon covering in course of time.

I dont fry fish on nonstick pans unless its battered. Vinegar and Baking soda can help getting rid of the burns.

There is an advertisement that I keep seeing on television for copper pans. It makes you want to buy them because the pots and spans are so pretty!! But I'm not going to buy them. I would love them, but I have no more room in kitchen cabinets for any more pots and pans.

I just purchased a copper pan for 20 dollars, It is one of the best non sticks I ever had. It is also deep so it can be used for deep frying.Though it boasts anti-scratch technology, I aint scratching it. It is too expensive.

Nice tips. Yet in India, I can see the 3 issues:
1)Wooden or Plastic spoons or serving spoons could be less in availability so yes there would be likely exposure to Stainless steel.
2)Indian cooking without high heating? Well, issues here as patience is something hard to come by when we have a big family and urgency.
3)Deep frying can be avoided on such pans but ruling out can be much tougher.
Yet I would still try to see if we can incorporate some of the suggestions.

You won't use plastic spoons for cooking, those utensils in the picture are silicone and not plastic. Silicone is made of sand. Wood and silicone utensils are available in Malls and Amazon.

Try to avoid using a pan like a wok, which can take high heat. Once fried, allow the pan to cool completely before washing. This will ensure that your pan will last longer. also invest in a good pan which brand you personally like.

We do have a few wooden spoons but somehow we have a tendency to use Stainless Steel ones.

Great tips. Thanks for sharing. Mine had scratches because i used the scouring pad to remove stubborn stains. Deep frying is not suitable for a non stick pan. Simple stir fry is akright, use stainless steel spatula. Pvc and eooden spatula are not user friendly.

Very good points. Also remember to tell your helpers (and husbands LOL), guys! They tend to destroy them because they really don't know. I keep telling my husband to stop using metallic utensils in our non-stick pots and pans, and does he listen? Does he heck!
